Going to 1st AA meeting today....Anxiety!!!
 

So I'm 19 days sober now and going to my first AA meeting in a few hours. My anxiety is high, I'm a bit shaky. Guess I'm just nervous because I've never been to one before but my brother will be with me. He's a recovered alcoholic and he's been to many AA meetings so its comforting to know he'll be there with me. Still nervous tho with anxiety! :eek1: :15:

I'm glad that you're taking action for your sobriety.

I'll bet your anxiety won't last long at all, especially with your brother with you.

Everybody there will have been right where you are and they will understand completely. Good for you for going.

Oh boy, was I anxious when I went to my first meeting. But my fears turned out to be unfounded.

You are going to a meeting filled with people who want the exact same thing that you want... sobriety, to not drink, to have a good life.

It was scary for me, but it was the best thing I have ever done. It was a turning point to a life of recovery and gratitude.

The only thing I had to lose by going...was my misery.

i dont know too many people that didnt have fear walkin into their first meeting.
for me it was fear of the unknown- i had no idea what my life without alcohol would be like.
what helped me walk into that first meeting was fear of the known- what my life with alcohol still in it would be like.
that and courage. walkin into AA couldnt hurt like alcoholism was.

Thank you everyone! I'm sure I'll be fine once I'm there for a bit, my anxiety wont be so high, hopefully! I'll give an update how it went when I get back. :grouphug: :VA018:

I think you are going to be surprised at what a red herring all that anxiety was. I chickened out in the parking lot of my first meeting, and went home. The second try I went in to the meeting, and within 5 minutes felt pretty much at home.

I'm sure you'll find lots of supportive people who understand what you're going thru. :hug:

Update... Just got back from my first AA meeting. I was very emotional, cried a lot but felt at home. The main speakers sitting up front kept looking at me the entire time and would look at me when they were talking. The meeting was an hour long but those two men stayed with me, talking for an hour and told me I'm very fragile right now and can relapse at any time because I'm still early in my sobriety. They want me to go to as many meetings as possible. At least 3 times a week. They GAVE me the "Big Book", fourth addition, for free! They never do that! And it costs $10.00. First they gave me the soft cover one then decided they wanted me to have the hard cover instead. They refused to take any money for the book.
Very nice people, glad I went! Also, got my first chip! The front says, DESIRE, and on the back it has the serenity prayer. those two men gave me their numbers, if I ever feel like picking up a drink or if I'm having a bad day, they said to call them. Also another lady gave me her number as well. I really felt at home there. :bible :candle6D: :VA018:

The meeting was an hour long. After everyone left, they talked with me for an hour so I was there for 2 hours. So glad I went 🙂

them phone numbers are great to have. they offer much better solutions than a bottle AND the phone is way lighter than a bottle,too.

Excellent! I'm so glad you went, too. Amazing isn't it? I've seen men cry through the entire meeting, so that's not too unusual.
And you got a Big Book and numbers!
Great job on going!

I was sure you'd feel right at home. :hug: Read the big book and call those numbers if you feel tempted to drink.

This is the first time he's been to a meeting in a year. He stopped drinking about a year before me. But we made a pledge to each other that we are gonna go to a meetingmeeting once a week TOGETHER! He is my biggest supporter because he's been where I am. Blessed to have him in my left and helping me know this road to sobriety as much as he can. :grouphug:
