Hurricane Dorien and The Old Me

We are about to get pummeled this weekend by Mr. Dorien!!!

Miami's energy is always crazy during hurricane warnings and watches, people start panicking and emptying out the gas and stores. You can feel the city's anxiety in anticipation. It's exciting and nerve wracking at the same time.

And Miami is notorious for throwing "hurricane parties." It's just another reason for people to drink heavily, and I used to partake. People empty out the liquor stores to get messed during a storm that could be potentially life threatening (which now sounds so insane to me, what if you need to ACT?!)

This hurricane, as I sit boarded up with my family, having really nothing to do because we may lose power for a few days, I know what I will be doing. Resting, meditating, playing games with my family, having some heart to hearts, working out and resting some more. And having fun outside once the winds start picking up (in true Miamian fashion of course!).

I am happy to be sober to be safe and show up for my family during this rough weather time.

Hopefully I can still log on, it will make landfall on Sunday evening and most likely hang out on FL for a day.

I hope anyone in FL stays safe!

Nic

Stay safe, sober and strength during this time
as I send prayers to you and all those affected
by this storm.

We too have had our share of Hurricanes here
in Louisiana and very well remember Hurricane
Andrew back in 1992, when I was newly sober
for 2 yrs.

My husband was called to his job to protect
a chemical plant while I stayed home with our
2 little ones holding down the fort, keeping
everyone calm during the entire storm.

Being sober and responsible during everyday
life challenges as well as times like this is extremely
important.

We didnt have computers back in the day, so
having technology like we have today to stay
connected to loved ones and your recovery
lifeline is comforting.

SR is here for you keeping you company before,
during and after Hurricane Dorien, helping you
remain calm during the storm.

NicLin! Can't tell you how much I love this share! Every part of it (except the danger etc of course! Even Atlanta is closely watching everything because so many coastal people (esp SC) come here . Like aasharon, I recall actively knowing about my first hurricane, Hugo, which pummeled our beloved Charleston and Isle of Palms.

It's amazing how grateful we are in crisis, being sober.

Take care - keeping an eye out and on you! I recall when you first joined us and am proud of your journey.

I thought you were calling me out for a minute there.

I'm many things, but I'm not a hurricane summoner.

Also please be safe

I love this post, good for you for being prepared and planning on staying prepared for what might come. This is a dangerous situation and you need to have all your wits about you.
I remember one time (before I quit drinking) when I was going on a trip via airplane with just myself and no children. A friend commented "ohh, a trip without kids! You can drink on the airplane!" And I thought "what?" I always drank on airplanes kids or no kids. But it got me thinking how that was in fact dangerous. Should an emergency happen I would not have been as sharp as I needed to be to protect my small children.

I grew up in Florida, near Miami and had my fill of hurricanes. They are exciting and anxiety producing and awe inspiring - all of that.

I hope everyone stays safe.

Today I'll be grateful for a calm weather day.

Looks like we are in the clear and out of the cone of uncertainty for now...which I am grateful for!

Please say it is so. I grew up on Key Biscayne, which is an island right off the coast of Miami, and my sister and I still own our family home there wher she lives. I worked forever at the Sonesta and when we wuz crazy young people thay would let us have a room and ride it out with a lot of drink. We get it bad when we get it. But this baby is so big and strong, everyone in its path or potential path needs to get and keep their hatches down. Be safe all. Great share Niclin.

Thanks everyone, checking in! This thing is a monster, that will hopefully continue on it's way north and out of our way!
