when the thought/obsession/desire to drink comes, you play the whole tape forward meaning, you not only think of the relief you think you will get from drinking or the fun, but also afterwords, the loss of control, the next day or next days of terror, bewilderment and despair.

Good morning . for me I use it as a tool. So like when I get the thought of boozing. I play the tape. Meaning all the crap I went thru just to get sober .not to mention all the carnage from the boozing the withdrawals . um yeah its working for me got 103 days to show for it. Keep coming back
It is when you think about what is going to happen when you pick up that first drink. You slowly go through the entire scene in your mind from start to finish as if you were reliving every detail and feeling every moment of what occurs when you drink alcohol.
If you have learned that one drink will never be enough and the consequences are deadly the "tape" recalls the disastrous scene. It is a very powerful tool to shut down the AV and remain on the sober plan.

As an aside, due to technology advances it is a bit dated as an expression since playing the tape forward is probably a reference to tape type media like cassettes and VHS. Soon for younger folks we will not only have to explain the meaning of the expression we will also have to explain the concept of tape type recordings.
It doesn;t make as much sense in a world of mp3s but it's about playing the tape through to the end...remembering not only the drinking (which often can be remembered in quite a rosy way) but also recalling the consequences & destruction that arise from it.

Others have explained it well - it really is an effective tool that I still use after over 4 and a half years of sobriety on the rare occasions when a drink sounds like a good idea. Works every time.
