As human beings most of us value freedom. We understand that freedom has to be limited by reasonable rules and regulations for a society/family/relationship to work. Still, within those acceptable limits we all want maximum freedom.

This is what is so strange about alcoholism. It takes away all freedom. We can not socialise any more. We can not function normally on a day to day basis. Everything becomes difficult. We have to plan how to get to parties and back so as not to drive drunk. We have to worry and think constantly about whether the next drink will push us over the edge. We have to fight through hangover days trying to act normally. We live in a permanent state of anxiety. We are in the worst kind of prison and we have no freedom. Worst of all the joke is on us. We created this and we perpetuate it.

Without alcohol we are free to travel wherever we like whenever we like. We can spend time with people without any fear of going over any edge. We can get up in the morning and have a normal day. We are as free as we will ever be.

The choice is ours, as are the consequences.
