MLD, I’ve found similar to yourself, contentment and happiness, it really is possible. Glad I stopped in time.

Saou, Andy, great pics.

This is my first weekend sober in a very long time, and the first weekend I've been a member of SR so it's really timely for me. I'll definitely be reading and posting.

Welcome toWeekenders Rose! We all started on day one, week one (dozens of times in my case) If you get past those first few tough weeks it gets easier and the time soon mounts up. Good luck!

When I was drinking, I didn't know what I'd do with myself if I didn't drink. Now that I'm sober, I wonder how I managed to drink so much all the time. No wonder I never got anything done...

Am very happy sober.

Perhaps happiness should not even be a consideration in early recovery. Whether it is obvious or not, we are fighting for our lives. Once that is stable and calm one can possibly afford the luxury of looking for some happiness or at least a feeling of being mostly content,

This resonates a lot for me! When I compare a weekend drinking to a sober weekend it's really shocking for me!

Hi Rose and welcome to SR!

I've found that my definition of fun has changed as I accrue more time in sobriety.

One of my goals is a complete wardrobe overhaul. While I was drinking I didn't care if I looked like a bum. On top of that I'm 40 years old now, can't be rocking T-shirts with pop culture references anymore. Since I don't want to drop a lot of money all at once I've been buying items piecemeal every other weekend.

On Saturday I'll go to the mall in the early evening to buy some items. It's more of an excuse to walk around as well. After I find a good deal I'll go have a nice dinner and dessert at one of the restaurants. If there is a movie I'm interested in seeing I'll go check it out.

Nothing extravagant. Just a bit of shopping, dining, and maybe a movie. But what brings me the most joy is seeing other people happy. Seeing other people enjoying their time shopping and going about their business.

The old me would have thought that was lame. These days I couldn't think of a better way to spend a Saturday evening.

We're glad you're here with us, Rose.

I couldn't imagine a weekend which includes alcohol.

It would be neither fun nor restful.

Mine were just drunken blurs.

This is something I enjoy also.
I like to arrive early at the theatre and concerts to have the enjoyment of watching other people arriving, arrayed in their 'best' and looking happy and excited.

I’m in for another weekend!

Speaking of fun, next week Mr Bonnie and I are taking Bonnie Jr #3 to see Aladdin. The live broadway show, not the movie. I love going to the theatre while sober. It’s nice to actually pay attention and remember the performance, and it’s nice not having to pee during the intermissions.

Less fun development: we just got a big, nasty tax bill from the IRS. I mean, wow. We have to pay a LOT of money. So vacation and travel plans are off the table. I’m cool with it though; upon hearing the news I immediately started making plans for our awesome “staycation.” Also, maybe it’s for the best that we can’t go anywhere; vacations are booze traps.

Anyway, I’m heading out for a walk. I’m listening to The Shrink Next Door podcast which was recommended by dpac. The first episode was really interesting so I have to go for a second walk to listen to the next one.

Later, people!

welcome Rose

happiness for me is not the goal in recovery

I welcome it, but do not chase it..it comes and goes

Peace in my soul is the plan nowadays

Great posts from everyone. These topics are always good ones.

Bonnie, hope you like it! That one is just really wild. The company who produced it is called Wondery and they’ve done a ton of investigative reporting podcasts like Dirty John. The Dropout and Dr. Death are also by them.

Tomorrow is friday. The days of the week don’t really mean anything right now since it’s nonstop zoo weekends but it’s at least nice to do something different for the two weekend days. I also have Thursday and Friday off next week and I am so excited! I think this is my first day off since Memorial Day. I’m starting to prepare for the Fourth of July cravings already.

Kaily, how are you doing?

Good night everone.

One of the things that struck me about my drinking career was that in my self-talk script, I often used the word 'survive'. So surviving with out it was near impossible, in my mind. Bah such rubbish.
