Previously I had to ask my doctor to prescribe sleeping pills. But the ones she prescribed left a metallic taste in my mouth for the entire day (was supposed to be for about half the people, the name of the active ingredient was Z-something). But those either didn't work or worked 'too well', meaning if I took as prescribed, I'd sleep, but I'd be sleepy all the way to like 2 pm the next day. That obviously couldn't work for a longer stretch, but the respite from insomnia was so badly needed at that time.
I've also heard that for some melatonin doesn't do anything. I'm lucky in that it helped me. Although I've done everything in my power in the past to screw my sleep up.
Have you tried natural remedies? They say peppermint tea (if you only briefly leave the dried leaves in boiling water) with honey. Honey was supposed to activate the natural production of melatonin and serotonin. Also, eat a banana (if you already don't), it contains l-tryptophan. That also helps the body produce serotonin.
This is what I've read and it has also worked. Serotonin and tryptophan should aid with sleep problems. Melatonin, as far as I know, only helps regulate the circadian rhthyms - which my problem, up all night and when I needed to get moving, the absolute best sleepiness would appear.

I like Gaba

I just ordered a supplement that has tryptophan, magnesium, and B vitamins in it. I have had some success with magnesium powder, but it has a digestive side-effect I don't like, so I stopped using it. Maybe in a lower dose, in pill form, combined with tryptophan, I can handle it. I'll give it a shot and report back.
Yeah, I think you recommended GABA to me some time ago, Lunar. I forgot about that. I'll try this stuff I just ordered first. My man friend has horrible sleep issues, way worse than mine. He is resistant to try anything for it. But if I try it first and it works, he's more likely to try it.
The Ashwagandha seems to level out my mood and anxiety,
especially while running my retail business.
The GABA helps me stay asleep much more reliably
than melatonin, with almost no stressful dreams, by comparison.

Doesn't alcohol mimic GABA? I've heard that word/combination before.
Quick google confirmed. As in, it's the thing that the brain starts producing less of when alcohol is present, which leaves us anxious and unable to sleep when the intoxication wears off. It's a natural sedative then, I guess.

I wake up very early most days, always been an early bird, but it’s getting earlier. I find if I go back to sleep I wake up with a thick head, so nowadays I get up when I wake up.
I have to compensate by going to bed earlier at night and it suits me better than trying to get back to sleep only to have headache on waking.
Insomnia is horrible. Inhope you find a remedy that suits you MLD.

I am in for a 3day weekend. Feeling pretty good today and the sun has returned. Coincidence?
Mrs. Has a cousin coming by for a couple of nights which is fun cause the lady is very funny and wants to see everything. Plus she has a thick Midwest accent so sounds like being home. Also means time to clean which is good. Wife is sleeping one off as she doubled her usual booze intake. I really don’t miss that need to drink and the need to hibernate till it’s need to drink time. Oh well. I’ll just keep on keeping on.
Been going easy on myself saying whatever it takes to get to 90 consecutive days then we can look at the diet and everything else. Still managed to lose a couple of lbs. reading all the posts and enjoying all the company.

I've had that 'wake up real early, try to go back to sleep, wake up foggy'. Which is why I nowadays usually just get going, even if the phone says 4.53 AM. On those days, I get most of my mandatory things done by 12 or 1 PM, which makes sense as it's similar to someone starting at 9AM to finish work.
Now, if I magically found a way to have energy for the rest of that day as well...
But it's 10PM here, so one more episode of Blindspot and then off to sleep. Have a good one everyone.

Present!
...I remember in my Class of March thread there was someone who decided to do a roll call and/or a list. Little bit like herding cats it was. Try to get a bunch of newly sober alcoholics to commit to daily checkins and see how that goes. Anyway s/he would start with, "Present and correct," which I didn't understand - could be a European thing.
So, Present and Correct. Whatever that means...

The phrase was also in use in Canada/USA by the late 19th century. The Winnipeg Daily Free Press reported this item in January 1876:
"Inspection - Adjutant Rodman, U.S. Army, dropped in and inspected the FREE PRESS staff this morning, and found all present and correct."
It is now used outside the military on both sides of the Atlantic, although it isn't a frequently heard phrase.

So, everybody's there with everything they need.
Meh, just lost a longish post - ages since that has happened.
So, for the second time:-
Long and busy day in Manchester today with no time to do anything but live in the present as recommended by Mags excellent OP.
I did not have much time for photos but I did get a couple - this is the town hall - the pic is badly framed as some selfish person erected a fountain where I needed to stand. I wish I could tell you a bit about it but I didn't have time to find out. MantaLady might be able to help..
Btw Manchester has something of a reputation for being rainy but it was fine warm and sunny today

Hi,
I’m gonna join in the fun here this weekend. Feeling a bit vulnerable and need to be accountable. Sounds like we have all kinds of plans. I may tackle a small lamp repair. We will see.

I’m so happy to see this post, within 24 hours my 3 day weekend and I can finally rest and hopefully get over this bug/ funk congestion I’ve dealt with all week. Bills are getting paid, savings are being built but permanent work still hasn’t arrived. I tell myself the ONLY way it will all work out is to continue staying sober, working hard. I’ve ticked so many tasks off my list today that I’ve put off for so long. Called a credit collection agency that I owed and have set up to make two payments within the next two weeks. When I was drinking a $200-$300 weekend party was nothing, now I’m on guard with EVERY cent. Hopefully soon my credit score will improve enough to transfer some debts to 0% interest. Sorry to ramble, just I’m on a roll and it’s only been 53 days.
like with any supplements its a good idea to see your Dr or at least do your due diligence (med interactions existing health conditions etc) what may have worked for others may not work or be suitable for you.

eh oop our Sao. I hope t'North isn't too grim for you.
busy day again today - I'm looking forward to the long weekend. Bim's "chop wood, carry water" quote kept popping into my head all day as a little mindfulness reminder - thank you Bim
I googled the phrase last night & it has all sorts of interesting Zen-type meanings about choice and acceptance. worth a read if you like that sort of thing, which I do.
stay safe everyone.

It was a long day. Free carousel night at my zoo and I worked it. Really really nice to see kids so happy over a free carousel ride. Pure joy over something so simple.
Anyways, good night everyone. Good to see new ppl in the thread! Still sober. Night.
