It’s time for me

Hi. This is the first time I’ve reached out to people in a similar situation to me and just reading some of the posts has made me realise, I’m not the only one and my thoughts and fears are perfectly normal.
I have lived with (and unwittingly supported) an alcoholic for over 15yrs and despite endless promises and apologises, I still come second place to a bottle of whisky every night.
I still want to support him but I don’t want to feel responsible for him or spend the rest of my life defined by his addiction.
its time for me.

Welcome Fatbird. I am the child of an addict (and apple didn't fall far from tree). His addiction eventually ended his 50 year marriage to my mother. My mother kept the fort all those years.... and made a home for all of us. It was her who said to me "the only thing stronger than love, is addiction". She's has always been a source of wisdom - but to me, that might have been the wisest thing she said ever. She was angry for awhile when the marriage ended - to be rejected and thrown away for money to gamble with. It took her a year or more to exhale. It's been probably a decade and she lives the life she loves; always busy and travels often. She still has some dealings with my father (who is now in a home)...and if I had a dollar for everytime she has sighed and said "thank God I'm no longer with that man"...I could take her on a real nice trip : ) It's not going to be easy. Reach out for community to help you through - as there as sooooooo many in this world facing your same struggle.
