Let Today Be the Day
And the physical and emotional struggle of the first weeks can be profoundly diminished with medical help. I was reasonably comfortable for the first 48 hours because I checked into an in-patient facility where the doctors provided medications to prevent seizures and diminish the physical symptoms of withdrawal.
Then, when I was up and around and reasonably coherent I began group therapy and was introduced to AA which held meetings on-site at the facility where I stayed for 10 days.
After that I transitioned into an intensive out-patient program, participating in further group therapy for a couple of months along with more AA meetings in the evenings.
In short, help is effective, pleasant, and available. Virtually everybody's health coverage provides some level of addiction treatment and your employers is obligated to provide you with short-term disability.
And as for your job, it's better to quit, get help, then get back on your feet once you're sober than to cling to a doomed lifestyle for the sake of your job.
Remember: alcoholism and addiction is legally regarded as an illness (which it should be). Your employer can't fire you for getting sick.

I am back. Today is day 1, again....I had 55 days starting Jan 1. Just had a weak moment and that is all it took. Anyway, I am at the 24 hour mark. It is almost bedtime. I hope that I get a little sleep tonight. Thank you all for being here. I am glad to be back.
