Invisible Bars
890 days sober today and I am so filled with gratitude....for sobriety and for this site and for all the constant support and encouragement I see on these pages day after day. Wanted to do something to express my gratitude and if I could, I'd bake you all a cake. But I'm rubbish at baking and how would I deliver burnt cakes all over the world? Not feasible. So instead I wrote a poem. Thank you for reading 😊
Invisible Bars
When the bars of the prison are invisible,
I tell myself that I'm free
Living life to the full, knowing it all
Compliant, controlled little me.
When the bars of the prison become evident,
I tell myself it's too late
This is where I belong, my strength has gone
Self doubt - my constant cell mate.
If only I'd look a bit further
Past the bars, fear, shame and more
No need to hide, I can always decide
When to push open the unlocked door.
The outside world seems too scary,
Consequences of the past and emotions too strong
I want to run back to the cell, to all I know so well
But hope keeps me moving along.
And gradually something incredible happens
I learn the true definition of free
Happiness is mine, it was out here all the time
Waiting for me to believe in me.
