Dealing with triggers

During my 312 days sober, I have learned to identify and react to my triggers in a healthier way. This morning I received an email from a client that would have led me to a drink at lunch today. I read the email and felt a huge rush of anxiety. I yelled out an expletive in the car. Of course, I was alone in the car.

I took a few deep breaths and started to address the problem as soon as I arrived at the office. Contacted the client and addressed the issue and how we will fix it. In the past, I would have buried my head in the sand and let the problem fester. I would then drink to forget only to realize the problem was still there in the morning. At which time I was more anxious.

Now we still have the problem but I am addressing it and following it up rather than ignoring it. It sounds so simple now that I have a clear head and got off the hamster wheel of alcohol.

Learning to cope with the things that drove us to drink is paramount to recovery. Glad you are doing well.

Nice job. Sounds like urge surfing to me. Life is better, and we have so much more control. Congrats and thanks for sharing.
