My mum thinks I can go back to social drinking...
... even though six weeks ago she told me, 'Please don't downplay your alcoholism.' Had a good phone call but this was surreal for me to hear. And she barely drinks at all. The only thing is she mentioned how on a holiday last autumn we would share a bottle of wine together at dinner and she noticed how much I didn't need to go beyond that (and I think she wants that again, 'cause it was nice to relax and talk a bit more openly for that hour or so). The thing is though we all (me, her and her partner) would just go to the cottage and drink tea whilst watching TV till bed, I most certainly DID go beyond that. I would be off not so much as 'nipping to the loo', but 'nipping at my bottle of whisky', that I secretly had. I didn't correct her tonight, and it just 'inspired' me to drink again.

You aren't a terrible son - you're an alcoholic, and we get it. It's hard when people close to us don't understand, like we have talked about on other threads....but we know that bottom line, it's what we need to do for ourselves as far as quitting goes that matters.
Right?
Right?
My mum would say the same.
It doesn't matter, man.
We know how bad it gets, and we have the threads here to prove it.
My dad and I used to share an afternoon drink when I would go home.
Now we don't.
I think he missed it for a while, but not any more,

if you wanted to learn to scuba dive.....would you ask your mother OR would you go find someone with expertise and skill in the art of scuba diving?
your mom's opinion on your drinking state is not a guide for recovery.
but nor is it an excuse to drink again. alcoholics can always find an excuse to drink. today it might be mom, tomorrow the weather, next day the job, day after the roommates.......it is only when we own the fact that we CHOOSE to drink and simply FIND excuses to validate the drinking, that we can truly begin to recover.
