Don't Tell Me What To Do
Don't Tell Me What To Do
This is an impulse I have all the time.
Perhaps a common theme for a lot of us.
I think its wise, when we feel the urge to tell others to back off...to look inwards.
Why are we pushing so aggressively when others merely want to help?
We take it as condescension, as someone telling us what to do, how to be, without understanding.
But I don't believe this is true. If we receive all advice with love and appreciation, we don't have to accept it, but we can accept the good intentions and feel the support.
We can merely say "thank you".
I don't always follow this advice, but I think its something to consider.
I notice our defensiveness collectively here in SR when posts don't go the way we want them to go. We all have lots of on our plate both in the fight for sobriety and just in LIFE.
But I think, more so than most places I've frequented on the internet, people here have good hearts.
Love to all.

Actually "Perhaps a common theme for a lot of us" is right on the money. Among the common personal traits more prevalent among alcoholics than the normal population are "ambivalence towards authority" and "self-reliance". We are naturally driven to rely on our own resources above those of others. It is one of the things that makes us less like to change our drinking ways than normal drinkers.
