‘Staying Sober this weekend together’-Weekender Thread 12 - 15 April 2019

Hiya

Jump in and join in!

A bit about me...I’ll try not to bore you too much

I stopped drinking on a Saturday morning, I remember it all too well. It was 20 July 2013.

The realisation hit me like a freight train...carry this on and it will kill my marriage, my job, my friends and heck, maybe even kill me!

So I got on the sober path, I decided from that day I would not, did not drink....Now, how to make that happen....I’d tried so many times before, with as many failures..this time I meant business and just like a builder needs the right tools for the job....I knew I needed the right tools and assistance in how to get them!

When I wanted to learn about computers, I went to college! It was a similar thing..., I wanted to LEARN how to stop this addiction I had!

In short, I found SR, found tools that worked for me and here I am!

If I can do it, I know you can!

Come and join us and have a Sober Weekend with us.

I shall say this only once

Surgery done

Much diff than surgery b4 Xms- that was a circus- preop assessments, 3-different dates in Unit, half a day tests preop- ECG etc, then later- surgery.
Including commute time- around 40 hours over4 weeks

The notification, admission, tests and surgery this time all done in 28 hours flat.

The anxiety (flashbacks etc) much worse than being here

I was given the 'airline hostess ' type talk on side effects, but this time mentioned strokes, death...and maybe needing to gouge out most of my little finger meat and putting a wire in. And maybe needing to do a deep skin harvest in the groin area- but alas, nay gentle readers- small graft near birthday dent, in until at least Monday

glad over

Thanks Mags,

Ugh, how well I remember the days, the anguish, knowing I need to stop, trying failing, telling myself I'm not 'that bad', feeling like crap. Miserably surfing for an answer. The day I quit, I was so sick, I thought for sure I had done some serious damage. Spent the first three days in bed. Joined SR on the 7th day. I had this silly notion that had to 'prove myself' first. SR was a god send, I found the encouragment I needed to continue and the courage to say 'never again'.

PJ, Thanks for letting us know. You are brave and it's over, and sounds like it went well. Rest, my friend, heal. Prayers for your quick healing.

I get it with the Fear of the Unknown and flashbacks. I'm good/terribad at that too.

Here's a pal to keep you company, PJ

I see we got a double-barrelled shotgun early opening. It is Thursday, right? (checks computer.) Oh! It's probably Thursday night in UK?? It's o'dark thirty here.

IN!

Good to see you John, congratulations on shotgun.

Well done PhoenixJ, I hope that the worst is over in regards to surgery. I hope too that you make a speedy recovery from it and are better off as a result.

I would echo what Mags and STDragon said about getting sober and joining SR. I knew that at the age of 54 after decades of heavy drinking and nearly a decade of full blown alcoholism I was reaching the event horizon of death or ruin by alcohol. I "lurked" (reading but not joining) for three months from October '14 and eventually something clicked and I quit on 30th December '14 and joined SR in Jan '15. Best thing I ever did apart from quitting itself as it laid out all the facts and never hid the truth - that there would be times when it would be tough but gave advice on how to get through those times.

Mags, no such thing as a too-early start to a sober weekend.

Like they say in AA, "The only meeting I was ever late for was the first one."

I'm in!

We are having a wicked spring snowstorm here - I made it to work but not very many people did. Schools are all closed, roads are awful, accidents everywhere. If I lived anywhere but right in the town I work in, I wouldn't be here. Or if I did not have all-wheel drive on my vehicle.

So grateful to be sober on this challenging day.

Be safe MLD--I know you Wisconsin folk know how to manage snow driving, so those accidents really tell the story on how bad it is.

Hot chocolate and Netflix may be the way to go tonight. . .

Unfortunately , I have to work from 6-8 this evening, also. We have a performance and I run the box office. I'll go home for a couple of hours to run my son around and grab a bit to eat, then come back. No Netflix and hot chocolate for me.
