Travelling Sober
Out of curiosity, does anyone have any experience with any kind of "sober cruises" or "sober resorts"? I'm sitting in my office looking at vacation destinations, and thought it would be something interesting to look into. Not knowing if such a thing existed....I Googled it...duh.
Came across a website, offering cruises centered on sobriety with different speakers and whatnot. I'm not really looking for a "rehab on the sea" or anything, just a vacation with some like-minded people. Being a single guy, I've often toyed with the idea of vacationing alone...just because I've heard it can be a different kind of adventure. Makes me anxious, but I'm willing to try!
Any thoughts? If not, I'll go about my Googling.

Hey I had no idea that existed! Cool! My guess is that you could choose not to go to whatever lectures or workshops you don't want to. I think it would be awesome to have the opportunity to attend them, though. I might check further into this! I went on a women's recovery retreat in Bali in 2017. It was amazing. No pressure to "do" the recovery stuff. But I did most of it, because it was really lovely. I'm sure different groups do things differently, and a lot would depend on the specific people you are with.
Oh, and I do love traveling alone. I went to Belize by myself in January. It was great. I met people, went and did whatever I wanted, took good care of myself. It was a real treat.

I'm definitely going to do some more digging into all this, so I'll keep you posted. I imagine there are a lot of companies looking to take advantage of the situation for the money...but that's to be expected.
One of the reasons I like traveling alone is that I can choose when to interact with other people. If I'm feeling like being quiet and alone, I can do that without making anyone else feel bad. If I'm feeling like conversation, I'll chat up people I run into on the plane, at restaurants, on excursions. It's up to me how sociable to be. I can be pretty introverted, so it suits me well.
I have travelled alone over the past 14 years to Maldives, Seychelles, Egypt, Morrocco, Turkey, Cyprus, Bali and other wonderful places. I don't know of any sober holidays as such but oddly I never used to drink on mine!! I love holidaying alone, you meet so many people and can pick and choose when you want to socialise.
I prefer to go to places where there isn't such a drinking culture so lots of nightclubs and brits is a no-no for me. I also like to do something whilst away so the Bali one was 10 days sea kayaking in the Komodo National Park round the islands, no shops so couldn't get alcohol and didn't see any for the whole 10 days. Other holidays I have been on diving trips, up early, amazing days you need to not be hungover, tired by 9pm, in bed sober happy and feeling good.
I make sure there are things to do and visit in the daytime, decent restaurants to go to in the evening so the main excitement is the food not the alcohol, sit in coffee shops some days next to the beach or in a nice small town with a lovely coffee and a book and people watch. I also prefer to rent apartments rather than stay in hotels as I can eat what and when I want and don't have to necessarily have to go down to the restaurant to get food if I am not in the mood. I can also control the environment where in the apartment if I have a chilled evening in sitting on the balcony reading there is no alcohol in the place, I don't see it and don't get triggered.
Hope you find something! xx

Pretty envious lol!! Red Sea diving is absolutely wonderful, so clear and so much coral. I learned to dive in Dahab on the Red Sea and it was such a wonderful place to learn. You are gonna love it!! Say hello to the fishes from the MantaLady (it's where I got my nickname many years ago!!) xx
Hi WhoDeyPI
I understand you have no affiliation with any website and you weren't promoting it, but we don't allow commercial links so I removed that and I edited your title a little.
If we can make this a commercial link free general discussion about sober holiday packages and not just about one company, that will be great.

I didn't know these existed, thanks for posting! I've considered taking time off work to spend some focused sobriety time, but was worried I'd get bored and start drinking. This is something I'll Google, too

Hi. Just another twist to this. I work for an airline (in sales) and travel frequently for business and leisure. I am lucky to fly standby for next to nothing and have also experienced wonderful places around the world. What kept me drinking was my travelling. I could not imagine flying, holidaying, travelling without alcohol. My first trip sober was for a 2 week trip to Goa India. It was just after Xmas which I survived sober. We had confirmed business class tickets with obviously lounge access= free booze. I worried myself sick over it. When the day came I did the lounge and flights and the whole trip sober. It was a mental barrier I have now overcome. I have had several trips this year and going to Bali for a long weekend again sober. So sober holidays are possible. There is so much more than just drinking.. I practice meditation and yoga and breathing exercises. I still go out to restaurants and the occasional pub when overseas but order my AF option and don't hang around for too long. I am 106 days AF today.
