The trick is to get yourself into a frame of mind where No.1 Craving does not occur as often as it would normally do. I am a "full blown" alcoholic and there was no way of resisting the cravings, I tried and failed many times. The only thing that worked for me was to get up at zero dark thirty, do some physical exercise-running/jogging in my case followed by a full days work. I would get home, eat then fall into bed by 9pm thus bypassing the worst of the cravings. Finally working out how to beat the cravings was what took me a long time, once I managed that quitting wasn't so bad.
