A stark reminder
I heard a knock at the door last night.
When I answered there was one of my neighbors from across the road standing there with about 10 music cd’s in his hands, fidgeting about with a look of desperation and a tinge of trapped cat.
He asked if I wanted to buy a few cd’s for a couple of quid.
I had to make my excuses and say no thanks.
He persisted by asking again but for £2 to buy a pint of milk. ( whilst shifting awkwardly from one leg to another and muttering under his breath)
I said no again I figured if I give him an inch he’ll take a foot and before long I won’t have a leg to stand on.
You see I talked to the guy at the beginning of the year and he had just been on an alcohol detox. He cleaned up and began to look brighter.
He didn’t seem to me like he would make the distance. He was saying things like “I don’t have much chance I’ve been drinking 35 years”
He relapsed a month or so later.
And now it’s the end of the year and he’s down to almost nothing.
No dignity, I’ll health, scruffy appearance etc.
I also think he’s taking class a drugs on top of it all now.
Poor ******.
That could easily have been me a few years down the road.
