Day One Again

I threw away 4 months of sobriety last night because for no other reason than I thought that I deserved it. How screwed up is that? I honestly didn’t enjoy it at all blackout too. Missed work today because of a hangover. The good thing is I have no desire to drink again.

You have no desire to drink tonight...what happens the next time you think you "deserve it"?

When that happens and I’m sure it’s going to I will remind myself that I didn’t enjoy it, and also I deserve to be sober.

I'm sorry SWB but I'm glad you made it back.

For a long time drinking was my reward too - but I moved on to healthier more empowering rewards.

Carls question is a pretty good one - looking at what you've done to stay sober so far, what do you think you might do differently this time?

I just need to keep my priorities straight and know that my sobriety is the top one.

The good thing is I have no desire to drink again.

I had that same feeling many times. It usually lasted about 3 days, if I was lucky.

I reckon you should at least consider a slightly more detailed plan SWB?

'Keeping my priorities straight' reads well and I used to say stuff like that all the time - but I'm not still sure what that means in practice.

There are some good ideas and suggestions here

One things for sure which I will find helpful going forward is I recognize what specifically what my triggers were that night and what to do if they come up again.

reminding yourself that you didn’t enjoy it might work for a bit, and then not.
do you really drink for “enjoyment”?
knowing you didn't enjoy it last time is unlikely to be a good defence for those crazy moments when getting some booze seems like an okay thing to do.

Swb,

When I thought I deserved it is when the suffering went to a new level.

I was craving this Thanksgiving. I deserved it. I have only had 3 oz of booze in 4 years. I deserve some booze...right?

Wrong.

Booze makes me sick. High BP, weak, sleep issues, get sick easier etc etc...brain damage!

For what...to go into a drunken euphoric stupor for an hour or 2. Then pass out.

Ridiculous.

Even folks that drink..1 beer. You see their eyes sort of glaze over. They get a silly smirk. It is a stupor that lasts maybe 20 minutes because they only drink 1 beer.

That is the little...take me away moment they get.,,,20 minutes.

There are way healthier ways to experience...take me a way moments. Exercise, helping folks, doing nice things, sleep, nap, meditation, deep breathing, music, movies, books, playing music, hit an aa meeting....etc etc.

That is my plan.

Thanks.
