New member Hi, I just joined this site. I have never joined an internet group before. I decided to join because I think it will help me stay sober. I decided to quit drinking on 10-20-18 for the first time. I have been drinking for 20 years, I would guess I have about 40 drinks a week. Its important I no longer drink for several reasons. 1) sometimes i get black out drunk and I am embarrassed by my behavior. 2) I am tired of feeling hung over every other day. 3) I have children and dont I want them to grow up seeing me drink. 4) it is expensive 5) I dont want health issues related to drinking. So far so good on my first two weeks. I know its early but I have faith I can quit for good! |
Welcome! Glad you’re here |
Those are all reasons I quit too after just shy of 20 years of drinking. And #5... I didn’t realize the huge extent alcohol was already affecting my health until about two months sober. Two weeks was always my breaking point until the last time I reached out for help. You are here, that’s a good start. Welcome to the club! |
Welcome to the next stage of your life.... Staying on this site and seeking out other means of support i.e therapy or AA which ever can help you see long term results. This will help you gain the upper hand on your addiction.. Peruse this site and you’ll find a commonality in the majority of the people here.. Best wishes and again welcome to a new beginning..😊😊👍 |
Welcome to the family. :) Congrats on two weeks! :) The first week or so is the worst for physical withdrawal so you should be well past that and on your way to feeling much better. Whatever you do, don't drink, as stopping and starting makes the withdrawal worse each time. I hope you'll use this site to help you stay sober for good. You'll find lots of support and wisdom here. :grouphug: |

Thank you for they replies. AtomicBlue - I am sure drinking has affected my health. I already feel better after two weeks and I am sure it will continue to improve. Lorie1482 - Last Friday, a week after I quit, I went to a consultation for an outpatient rehab. It was ok, but I decided not to go that route. It was very expensive and they used drugs to reduce cravings, which I have mixed feelings about. It was also weird what the guy said at the end. When I told him "I would think about it over the weekend and I would not drink while I was thinking about it." He said "don't worry if you drink this weekend it does not make you a bad guy and you didn't go back on your word." I know people that are dealing with addiction are not bad people, it's a medical issue. But why would he say that to someone who is trying to quit and has one week sober? It just seemed odd. Least - I don't think I had any physical withdrawal. I had a headache most of the day around day 5. I'm not sure if that was related to quitting drinking or not. My biggest concern is temptation. I am keeping a mindset that if I have another drink at some point I will get blackout drunk again, I will embarrass myself, I will wake up feeling like crap. This is truth, because every time I get blackout drunk I tell myself the next day I can't get "that" drunk anymore, then it always happens. Tonight is Friday which is always my big night. I'll make sure to come home right after work and spend the evening with my wife and kids. So far I really like being sober. While I would get blackout drunk maybe twice a month, I drank most days. I would wake up 3 or 4 days a week with a hangover that would very in severity. Waking up two weeks straight without a hangover feels great! |
