Hello Italiangman and welcome to Sober Recovery. I once had 10 years of sobriety myself and have found the forums here to be of great help. Good luck. J |
Welcome to the family. :) I relapsed after 20 years sober too. But now I'm sober again, coming up on 9 years. So it's possible to right the ship. :) |
Hey, Italiangman. Welcome to a great place for advice support and help. I had 15 years of sobriety when I relapsed. Now, with a strong plan, a good therapist and the help of the good people here at SR I have 32 months of amazing sobriety. I hope you stick around and post often. Best Wishes. |

Hi and welcome Italiangman - You find a ton of support here - welcome :) what do you think led you to drink again after 20 years? D |
I'm curios to know what happened too. What did you do to get sober in the first place and get that 20 years. |

Posts like this are always a wake up call to me. Any of us with long term sobriety need to be reminded we are only a drink away. |

Welcome to SR! |
You were sober for 20 years. If you decided to drink a few days in the 21'st year, you're still looking at a 99.999% adherence to sobriety. I don't think Airlines have this success rate. I would say don't look at the slip. |
I would say don't look at the slip. I think I get what you mean tho - don't get stuck on this mistake? :) D |

I would say don't look at the slip. The thougt of a relapse scares the crop out of me. Here's why. People tend to think that an extended period of sobriety will put you i a better position as regards alcoholism, should one ever pick up again. It would seem to make sense. In my case I had about 8 or 9 years of really insane drinking ending up with malnutrition and a doctor's warning that it was doubtful I would survive another year. Since then I have had 38 years untinterupted sobriety so you might think my position has improved. Where before I had a years to live, based on my improved physical and mental health, I ought to be able to survive a lot longer now. But from what I have seen, the opposite is the case. Alcoholism progresses whether I drink or not, and that is the trouble. Every alcoholic with time that relapsed did not pick up where they left off, they piced up at where they would have been if they never stopped. Therefore it is relatively rare for an alcoholic with a lot of time up, to survive more than a few months if they take the fatal first drink. Someone like me, who had perhaps a year to live, If the insanity was to return, would be dead within a couple of months. I have not seen many old timers relapse, but in every case they either get back into the program with renewed vigour, or they deteriorate and die very quickly. That is the nature of this progressive illness. |
