worried about side effects
Hello guys, I am currently in the process of stopping drinking cold turkey. I've been drinking on and off for about 10 years. I heavily drank every day (just beer / cider ... no spirits) and managed to quit cold turkey before for about 3 months with no side effects. in fact i didn't even try to quit i just joined a gym and only put healthy stuff in my body. at that point i ever even considered i had a problem.
any 3 years have passed since then and I was consuming 8 cans of Stella per evening (i word 9-5) and still managing to go to work sober in the morning. then on weekends i would consume 8 cans from midday until about 5pm, have a nap for an hour or so and then consume another 2-3ltr of cheap cider (5% proof the same as Stella).
I have since quit drinking yesterday 25th june and on that day I had some pretty bad shakes, legs wobbly etc and felt very nauseous all day long, I wasn't sick though. I Had just finished a 4 day session of drinking so I kinda put it down to that so I called a helpline we have in the UK who told me that cold turkey is very dangerous for my level of consumption. So that night I had a beer and it took me about 3 hours to drink it as i just wasn't interested I wanted to be sober. I slept ok last night , alot of anxiety thinking ghosts were in my room at any little noise I heard, my heart raced a little bit but nothing that concerned me and had some very very vivid dreams like almost as soon as i closed my eyes I was in a dream (like little mini dreams I would come rite out of for the first 2 - 3hours)
Today I woke up feeling worse having had just 1 drink than i ever did having 8+. after and hour the feeling passed with some water and coffee and i feel fine now other than some sweating and an ever so slight head ache, I dont feel like drinking tonight even though ive been told to ween my self off. and doing some research on the internet has scared me some.
So am I ok to continue cold turkey or are bad side effects yet to hit me?? any experience with this? sorry for the long post

Welcome,
Detoxing from alcohol is unpredictable and can be dangerous. Talking to your doctor might be a good idea. In general, I think stopping cold turkey is easier for alcoholics than weaning yourself off it. It's very hard for alcoholics to cut back. The physical withdrawal symptoms usually ease up after about 5 days of not drinking.

Welcome to SR Singularity, and congrats on making the decision to quit. Yes, you will read some horror stories on the internet about withdrawal and rightly so as it can be dangerous, even life-threatening in severe cases. That is not the norm of course, but if you have concerns it's never a bad idea to at least just get checkup by your doc.
