Never hurts to check in with your doctor. Just be honest and ask for help.

It's a good idea to have your doctor's help to go thru detox safely. Meds can be given for a short time to calm anxiety and reduce the danger of seizures.

Once you've detoxed, do you have a plan to stay sober?

Welcome aboard and stay busy reading the wisdom of these smart folks and you will be on your way to recovery. I highly suggest joining a local support group like AA and yes, if you have been drinking hard for a long time,by all means see a doc.

Welcome, Rover! I was a daily drinker too, and it was so MISERABLE at the end. As others have said, consulting with your doctor is always the safest approach (although I didn't personally do that). We are here to help.

welcome, RoverVA.
the 'forever' concept drives some people away in fear, but for me it was necessary and liberating to know that is what i'm doing and where i'm going with this.

good for you that you know that's what you're looking to do.

Thank you all. Yes, I have a plan to attend AA and be on this site everyday to get through. I haven't able to reply to some private messages, because I have not reach 15 posts yet.

Finally, able to see the doc today. Came clean about my drinking and hold nothing back. He gave me a prescription for Oxazepam to help with the withdraw, so my Day 1 begins today.

Good job and good luck. Post often on SR if you feel the desire to drink.

Welcome, Rover! Congratulations on day one and the start of a new, amazing life without alcohol. It was a good idea to see your doctor; quitting full stop can be dangerous without help. Stick around here and post often--SR is a great place for advice and support and is a vital part of my sober plan. Wishing you all the best.
