Screening for disorder
 

Yesterday I had a Drs appointment and today read my Care Summary under my patient portal.

This was posted:

2. Screening for disorder
• alcohol use disorders identification test
• geriatric depression screen
• fall risk screening

I can't figure out what tests were used to designate each.

First Dr said, "I'm going to say 3 words and I want you to repeat them."
I did that.

Next, the Dr. had me draw a numeric clock and then designate the time: '10 after 11:00". After I did that, she asked me to repeat the 3 words she had previously told me.

I don't remember the fall risk screening.

Anyway, just thought it was interesting, though slightly disturbing since I'm being admistered geriatric tests. :( .

I am loathe to admit I'm a senior.

I have been to several apts with my Mom for dementia screening. Those were some of the questions and tasks she was asked to answer and perform.

I'm only 53 and the ole brain definitely isn't what it used to be. I know the more engaged I stay with others....and with others that are younger than I am the better off I am. As an isolationist that's a challenge for sure.

My Mom was asked to take Omega 3s (the brain is largely fat), vitamin d (plus calcium for absorption) and vitamin b1. Along with her usual multi. I dunno if it helps her but I know it helps me. There are also numerous prescription meds but she didn't want to take them. And frankly I don't know if they do much more than destroy her liver and kidneys.

Old age aint pretty. Its something I think our culture needs to talk about a whole lot more. But we have such a youth centric, weird azz viewpoint toward age. Its like if we talk about it we're all going to drop dead or something.

Those were basic questions to test for cognitive functioning. Someone who may be experiencing early signs of Alzheimer's may have trouble with them.

I suppose I'm fortunate being in Florida for medical care. It has to be the old person capital of the U.S.. It seems there is a direct correlation between the number of elderly and doctors.

I do like the early bird senior discount. While the younger generation is just finishing lunch, the seniors are using the early bird discount for dinner. :) .
