Is this normal????

For the past two weeks I’ve become increasingly tired. I have great night sleeps but wake up tired, within half an hr I’m awake but come 4pm I get drowsy then 6pm I’m ready for bed!!
I’m also finding sometimes I get like tension headaches and recently my boss has mentioned I’m making a lot of mistakes at work. Lack of concentration, I guess. It’s coming up to three months of not drinking alcohol and am wondering if these are normal symptoms of withdrawal possibly? I’m also really irritated! Anything can set me off! My work is really getting me down so I guess I understand the irritation but not the severe tiredness. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

After three months you're no longer in withdrawal. Might be PAWS; Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome. Lack of concentration and other irritating symptoms are common in the first few months of sobriety. Stay sober, it will get better.

PAWS is still withdrawal, it's just not acute withdrawal which is where the medical danger regarding alcohol withdrawal is. There can be two parts to the withdrawal phase.

Irritability and foggy headedness are both common PAWS symptoms.

They started easing for me around the 6 month marks and I had considerable improvement around 13 months.

Allie - I was absolutely exhausted for about 6 months after quitting. I had beaten myself up very badly & needed time to heal. I was happy to be sober, but irritable at times too. Congrats on your almost 3 months - that is wonderful.

I had similar questions, and I still do. I think it took me until about the 9th or 10th month until I felt OK. I wrecked my brain with alcohol, so I was content with pushing through and waiting it out. I read a lot of articles on PAWS and recovery for reassurance...reassurance is important to let us know that we are going to be OK. Keep pushing!!

Hi Allie,

Great job on staying sober, your well on your way to the life you deserve!

I'm at 5 months sober today, and I still need a little nap in the afternoon. If I can't fit it in due to work ect...I'm in bed by 8pm.
And, I"m OK with that!

I wouldn't worry too much about making a few mistakes at work.

We only need to think back to the days we couldn't even make it to work due to our drinking! I make mistakes too, I"m a happy, sober human.

ONWARD!

A tendency of the alcoholic still suffering from alcoholism, even though they may not be drinking, is to keep trying to organise life to suit themselves. This activity consumes huge amounts of energy, all brain activity thinking planning, reliving, re feeling, projecting, stressing etc. I suffered from that though I had no idea there was anything wrong. It was they way I always operated as an alcoholic with an alcoholic mind.

It was my normal MO. Just stopping drinking didn't change that. Taking the steps changed it, and I became much more serene, meaning I don't waste as much energy as I used to worrying about things I have no control over.

the physical part of recovery is not a straight line.....it sort of ebbs and flows.....we have surges of well being, followed by periods of extreme fatigue. neither state lasts forever.

while i would not suggest revealing your recovery to your boss, you could acknowledge the "mistakes" assessment......confirm that you are aware you have not been quite yourself lately, have not been feeling well, but are doing all you can to get better and be better. you then could follow up with a suggestion on how to double check your work to catch any mistakes.
