It's progressive.
Iam also 27 and share the exact same story you wrote basically. Functioning alcoholic that can drink with no end in sight and get up the next day fresh and healthy.
That is until only last year where everything spiralled out of control.
I went from "functioning" too disaster overnight.
I started drinking every single morning because i aspired to nothing else, i started to need alcohol every single minute. and this all happened spontaneously for me.
everything in my life i half finished so i could just get back to drinking. i would eat less so my stomach would be less full so i can get the most out of the bottle.
I would finish work early all the time so I can have more hours for drinking.
I would get cheap hotels and just drink and drink without friends or family getting on my nerves for that weekend, or they wouldn't see me in that state. there is a reason i got cheap hotels, and that's so i could use the cash saved on booze for that night.
again i went from normal 26 year old, drink a few in the evening - to that.
and i stopped.... because my life would have gotten worse from there on. There is no room for experimenting with alcohol for me.
