Good afternoon argillaceous. I hope that your dear one will be up & running around soon - Penny & your family are in my thoughts. I am sure that she is also willing you to be as strong as she is x

argill, my thoughts will also be with you. Penny's face is so gentle and wise, what a sweet girl! And I recently lost my beloved 15-year-old basset, Ned (also my avatar) who had been with me for 12 years, so I understand how you still miss your boy...

I have a little oil lamp that I light for folks who are going through hard times. I will light it for your dear girl and you, and for the memory of your boy.

Thanks all for checking back in today.

Penny was scheduled to have surgery after lunch. I called at 3:30pm and she hadn't gone in yet (was slated to go next). It's 5:30pm now.

I was doing pretty well until a few minutes ago when I got struck with a strong desire to drink. I mean strong. You know, the kind where you can just see that drink in your hand and you just know how that first swig is going to taste and feel? The kind where you conveniently forget that there's about a hundred places you could stop yourself before you get to the liquor store and back? The kind where you just say "frack it," I'm doing it.

That's the kind of strong I'm talking about.

But "frack it." SR is stronger. I am stronger (I think...) My SR buds are here for me through whatever happens, good or bad. So am posting instead. And starting to cry. (Wow, that was unexpected.)

Thanks for being here you guys.

The delay in the operation has made it even more stressful than it was. We always think of falling back on our 'comforter', even though we know it doesn't really end up helping us cope. You will rise above those feelings, I predict. Praying for Penny.

Thanks for checking in. Keep fighting that craving! You're strong and so is Penny! Brighter days are ahead for both of you if you can just pull through this challenge together. We are here for you, too.

Good news! Surgeon just called and Penny is out of surgery and everything went well. Penny is zonked out right now but we should be able to pick her up tomorrow.

I knew I was holding a lot of anxiety when I had the urge to drink, but had no idea just how much until the surgeon called.

When the phone finally rang, I felt like I was a boiling pot of water that suddenly froze, every bubble, steam strand, and water burst just stopping dead to rights. My brain diverted every neuron to my right ear and the little guy in there that interprets language was all jumping from one foot to the other, afraid he wouldn't hear anything correctly, and the little short-term memory guy said "sorry, no can do."

And then she said the words "Penny is OK. The surgery went well."

The boiling pot resumed and very quickly dwindled to a simmer. Whew.

So what's my next thought? "Oh man, I would love a drink right now." [insert visual: head banging against wall]

Fine AV, so be it. Drink it is. Chai tea, straight up, suckah.

Thanks all who posted to support me in my moment of weakness. It really helped.

So relieved to hear she got through it - and you did too. You girls are fabulous.
Please let us know how she is tomorrow - and I hope you get some decent sleep tonight.

Oh hoooorraaaay!!!! I am so glad for you and Penny! So proud of you for staying sober for your sweet girl. She needs you sober as she recovers, and I know you will want to be lucid and awake to appreciate every ounce of affection she gives you post-surgery
