I'm a huge reader, what books have you all read that have helped in your sobriety?

My experience - Until I took the actions necessary to get well from my disease, all the reading in the world couldn't get me sober. I had to earn my sobriety.

I am currently reading Waking the Tiger
Codependent no more with the workbook.

I haven't read through your posts. Have you tried reading the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous? In the Doctor's Opinion, it explains the disease of alcoholism.

Where would I get that? Amazon?

You can try Amazon. I think the book can even be bought at Barnes &Nobel, or any book store. There may even be a copy on the Internet free. Try Googling "Alcoholics Anonymous ,The Doctor's Opinion."

I found Under the Influence by James Milam and Katherine Ketcham to be the most illuminating book on alcoholism.

Reading the book made me understand alcoholism as a physical and likely inherited condition that I have. It made me realise I could never, ever drink again, and helped me understand why. With the information from that book, I felt empowered to do something about my condition. Alcoholism is eminently treatable ... with sobriety.

I think my favourite is 'Drinking: A Love Story' a memoir by Caroline Knapp.

I know you've been sharing some struggles in the past few days Lori- have you quit drinking? I am an AAer so I "recommend" the BB but strongly feel it's meant to be started with a sponsor and as part of working a program.

I am a big reader so among the books I read and enjoyed (and as someone said, I had to get sober for any of them to really help me- reading while drinking was just entertainment)

Living Sober - about the first year of sobriety (it is a Hazelden book so AA approved lit but not an official AA book)
Blackout - Sarah Hepola
Dry- Augusten Burrows
Between Breaths - Elizabeth Vargas (great on the connection btw alcoholism and anxiety)
Patrick Kennedy's books, esp the one that's a compilation of people's stories

There are lots of moms/drinking books if you look through Amazon, too, Lori.
