Cold turkey
 

Hi all,
I've been doing well reading alot just not posting. I found out my nephew has a problem with drinking he's going cold turkey, has anyone had success with cold turkey at home. I went to rehab, I see online this can be dangerous. He lives in different state, but I'm still worried. Any advice? Thanks,

Withdrawal varies in severity depending on amount, length of use , and number and severity of previous detoxes. There is considerable individual variation as well.

My belief is that it’s better to have a doctor on board.

Are you sober? If so, you can give him some pointers.
If not, perhaps you can work a plan together.

Yep I'm sober i told him o would help pay for treatment, I think doctors should be involved.

I think drs should be involved too Mick.

As said above, medical supervision is the way to go.

I went cold turkey.
I went through extended withdrawal (PAWS).
I simply had to be DONE with alcohol in my body so I risked an uncertain future over the certain death by drinking in the year, 18 mo my dr projected.

I would do it this way again.

It's not for everyone and some of the things I went through would certainly have plenty of people heading to the ER.

I used Antabuse and Campral for 90 days and a year or so, respectively. We added ativan (daily, as needed) once it became clear that anxiety was a long standing problem.

Many people recommend at least immediate help with detox. Ultimately your friend has to choose if when and how to stop. You can't do that for him no matter how clearly you see the problem.
