Beet Overdose - day 3

Today is day 3 and I'm feeling so much better. It turns out it wasn't a bug as my husband suspected and it wasn't the alcohol as I suspected (although I have no doubt it didn't help) - I had a beet overdose! As you all know the effects of beets when you go to the washroom as far as colour, well on day 1, the effects were very clear. A few days before, I had eaten a 5 lb. bag of beets (in 2 days). It took several days for it to react. Last night I googled the effects of having too many beets, well it turns out you can have severe cramping, diarrhea, vomiting and it can be toxic for your liver. I'm glad to know this information but still can't forget my 6 day binge. It's over and I'm hoping knowing it was the beets doesn't give me any ideas. I'm hoping I can stay strong. The beet story doesn't change the fact that I'm an alcoholic.

...sorry if you think I am being nosey here and you can tell me to mind my own business but why did you eat a 5lb bag of beets in the first place? That's nearly 12 kilos of beets....I am curious if not freaked out a little by your confession lol

Great question! I bought the bag and cooked them all up at the same time. My husband didn't want any so I ate about half with dinner then put the rest away. Ended up eating the rest the following day. Didn't seem like so much at the time ... lesson learned. Maybe shows my thirst for excess.

WOW. I didn't know that about beets. You're probably not going to like beets very much anymore. Day 3 is great. You sound strong, so keep it up!

Thank you sunflower for sharing your
beet story with us and am glad you are
still moving forward with your recovery.

I love to use beets when I juice. That
beautiful, deep red color is eye catching
and is delicious when I combine several
other fresh veggies or fruits together to
make my red juice to drink.

I remember last yr I went on a beet
craze and was using lots of fresh beets
to juice. I don't really recall having
intestinal problems, but I could have.

Reading your post helps to remind me
that everything in moderation is important.
Even when it comes to those beautiful
red beets.

Sooooo, thank you very much as I
needed to be reminded of that.

Beets are expensive here in Florida. $5.00 for 2 beets. I love them baked with lots of butter, salt and pepper. YUM!

isn't 5 pounds more like 2.26 kilos? I mean, that could be four or five large beets.

I've never eaten even one beet - but I have been known to binge on other foods, and there are usually some uncomfortable consequences. (Imagine that. An alcoholic with food issues. Shocking.)

Sunflower, I'm glad you're okay!

I love sweet beet chutney with crusty bread and a salad....*drools*

Edit: Bim, you are right! I got all my conversion the other way round...11kgs would have taken 2 whole days to eat lol (never was any good at weights measures and distances at school)

Oh man you poor thing. I use beets in juice when they are in season and, um, yes, the day after can be alarming. But I've never had the digestive issues...probably because I just used the juice.

Would you just stick to oreos when you binge please? Just kidding!

I believe here in Baton Rouge at Walmart
they are $2 and some change for 3. So, its's
easy to want to load up on them, in which
I have to the point.....reminding myself that
I must have been out of my mind...!!!! lol

With your post, im once again reminded.....
all in moderation.

See, how awesome it is when we share
our own ESH - our experiences, our
strengths and our hopes of things, before,
during and after, that it can possibly help
another. Cooool Beans..!!!!

That's how it rolls in recovery.

I didn't even know you could overdose on beets - it makes sense. Beets also have a ton of sugar, I am one of those who doesn't think 5lbs is too much in two days. I put in 4 or 5 rows and I am the only one in my family who eats them A lot of draft horse owners feed pure beet sugar pulp to their horses in the winter to supplement roughage.

I am glad you feel better Sunflower.

I use almost a cup of beets on my salad most days. Love them - and yes, they have tons of sugar. Maybe that's why you ate so many, Sunflower?

At first I wondered how one could physically eat 5 lbs of beets in two days.
Then I remembered my Mom used to make borscht all of the time and it was the most amazing soup I've ever eaten. Beets are delicious and never available where I live now. I bet I could do some damage to a bag of beets if I came across one. However thanks to your experience I will know not to get too crazy. Thank you for sharing!

I ate 5 bags of beet chips once. It made it difficult for me to #1 the next day but not #2.

That's just incredible, who would have thought. I googled this after reading your post. Thanks for letting us all know, those of us who love beets and juice or make smoothies. Gives new meaning to moderation in all things.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm feeling very good now. I probably ate between 20-25 regular sized beets, only cost $3. The day before, I had just planted 4 rows of beets in my garden. I will remember not to eat them all at once!
I'm very thankful to have this group as a resource. Today, I went out for lunch with a long time friend and told her I was an alcoholic. She said you mean you have a drinking problem. I said no, I'm an alcoholic. I have no control over alcohol and I'm trying very hard not to drink again. I'm not sure why, but I really wanted to share it with someone. I've only told my older sister, who is also an alcoholic (recovered for over 20 years). I did not feel judged at all which was great and what you'd expect from a great friend.
I hope I don't post too often but it's really nice to read the messages here with people who have been through or are going through the same thing. Thanks again and have a nice evening.

In early recovery sunflower, which by the
way is a lovely screen name for you. Maybe
one day you will know that you are truly a
Flower of the Sun.... or in other words, A Child of
God or your Higher Power as you see Him.

Or you feel that deep within
your heart already.

Anyway.....

In early recovery, after spending 28 days
in rehab via a family intervention, family
doing for me, getting me help which I couldn't
do for my own self at that time in my life
at 30 yrs old, I felt alone in my own skin.

Not alone with family because I was
married and had 2 beautiful little ones,
but alone as being the only one with
this addiction and newly in recovery
for my alcohol addiction.

Family didn't understand my recovery
nor the affects alcohol had on me mentally,
emotionally, physically, spiritually. Folks
in my family circle had no addiction and
thus went on their merry way in life, school,
work, etc, with difficulty with communication
and understanding.

My escape was with my many many meetings
where I was not judged but made to feel a part
of and understood without questions. I was
amongst folks I didn't know personally, yet
in a most remarkable way, we all connected
with our common problem and solution, our
addiction and recovery.

It feels the same way here in SR too. Folks
I don't personally know, never seen or met
in person, yet, thru these computer screens,
the words I read, I can actually feel connected
with many here.

I can read their words and have that sense
of understanding, care, communication where
I don't feel alone or by myself with my addiction
in recovery.

Having Support with each step, with each
day sober with continuous sobriety is huge.
Never hesitate to talk about what's bothering
you, or maybe something you don't understand,
or figure out, because folks here or at meetings
will gladly help by sharing our own ESH,
experiences, strengths and hopes of what
life has and is like before, during and after
alcohol or drug addiction.

SR is definitely an awesome lifeline to
hold onto and another tool to add to
your recovery tool box to help build an
achieve a strong, solid recovery foundation
to live your life upon for yrs to come.

Well what is an alcoholic if it isn't someone with a drinking probem??!. Lol. People seem so scared or reticent of the word "alcoholic". It still conjurs up images of old men on skid row swigging hard spirits from a brown paper bag all day. My brother (who has his own alcohol issues) said to me "you're not an alcoholic, you're just someone who can't stop drinking once you open a bottle of wine"!! Eh??!! I had to laugh. I said well what the f%@k do you think an alcoholic is then 😂😂
Congrats on 3 days and acceptance. Accepting I am an alcoholic has been paramount to my recovery.
