Your recovery is precious, never take it for granted

I did, and I lost it.

Back in June of last year I reached the milestone of eleven months. Eleven months! This came after 25 years of heavy drinking when I'd only stayed sober for a couple of short periods fuelled by guilt rather than commitment. And then it happened, and I truly thought I'd never drink again. Not in a million years. After ten years of waking up every day desperate to quit, I did it. My self respect gradually returned, my health improved, I started to live life. It was the most beautiful thing I could have ever imagined.

And then I took it for granted, and I lost it. The last 9 months have been a blur, just like so many others. Sometimes my sobriety is like a dream, and it's hard to believe it really happened. Other times I'm back in the moment, but only for a split second.

When I was sober I became me again, and then I drowned me in booze.

Please take care of your recovery, it really is the most precious thing.

I write this three days sober.

I did it too, Supersonic - had 3 yrs. sober & went back out for years. It was so much harder to regain my sobriety the second time. I can never afford to take it for granted - the idea terrifies me. Thanks for a great post, and congrats on your 3 days sober.

I'm so grateful you've got those 3 sober days, and know you can build on that, one day at a time, and soon enough you'll have those 11 months (and a good life) back.

I've got 11 months myself and I daily forget that I'm an alcoholic.

I drank pretty much consistently for years but every so often there'd be a massive binge and I could never tell if those would last days or weeks ~ one was three weeks and how I didn't die I don't know, but I did end up in the wrong country, fracture my skull, trash a kitchen, get arrested, and more.

So thank you for a great post and a reminder to stay vigilant. You sound like you've got this. Keep Going!

Welcome back, 5upersonic; good job on five sober days.

Did you follow a solid plan the last time you sought and achieved sobriety?

A solid plan could truly be a game-changer.

I,will post a link to,a fabulous SR thread on that subject in a moment.

Thanks supersonic🙏 Yep, I had nearly three years and started drinking again. It took 18 months to get stopped again. I’ll be eight months sober next week. My relationships and physical and mental health are so much better as a result.

Welcome back, I am glad you have 3 days back.
I had 5 years sober, relapsed and drank for 6 and I am now 5 years sober and going strong. I truly hope you will build back up on those 3 days.
If I could do it, so can you

Thank you so much for posting, Supersonic. I agree that sobriety is precious, and you've attained it before and I believe you will do it again.

I had 5 1/2 years sober and drank.

It took me a year to get sober again. It was really difficult to quit this time and I wasn't sure I was going to make it.

Now I've got 8 years sober, and I'm not going to become complacent again.

Thanks all, your words mean a lot to me.

It's time to rebuild my recovery. If I'm honest I let my defences fall away, piece by piece. It was like a game of dare with my AV and before long I couldn't distinguish myself from my AV. Next time I'll be ready.

The really great thing is that we can get our recovery back at any time we choose, just by making our last drink our last drink. Our first day in our lasting recovery is as important as our 1000th day, one doesn't exist without the other. So celebrate every single one.
