Our troll came in again and sent out some terrible PM's.

Tomsteve and MindfullMan did NOT send the PMs and any information in the PMs is all false.

We are once again sorry for any discomfort caused by these messages.

i didnt know until this morning that its possible to change setting for receiving PM's.
i wonder if a thread informing people of how to do that would be wise?

I think I will start making that setting default for new members until we solve this problem.

If it's any consolation Tom and Mindful - I, and I'm sure everyone else, didn't for a second think anything came from you.

isn't there a way to trace back to the IP address? since this one "person" has done this multiple times now, and with some absolutely vile messages, it seems to deserve another level of action, maybe??

I agree with Anvilhead. I understand not wanting to ban someone on a recovery site because it's for many a life and death situation but on another hand to loosely quote AA: our common welfare should come first...

Tom and Mindful have some sobriety under their belts but what if that person picks on someone who is very fragile???

Anyway, I am glad I don't live in that person's head.

those are the ones that concern me. theres been many instances of suicide after trolls have gone after people.

i was contacted by the trolls told i was perverted because am transgender made to feel like i was being attacked by other members it wasnt until i read the bottom of the pm that i noticed that they wanted pics of me predtors making me think that some members where like this dangerous to any one feeling vunrable

I noticed in the week that the settings could be changed, and remembering my vile message received a few weeks ago decided to change it.

It does mean people can onky send PMs if they've been added as a friend, but at least only more trusted members can send PMs.

This is good but the troll, which is a generous name for him/her, also ran up a number of responses on threads. Ugly demented stuff all round.

Well, it's the best I can think of for now. And I do think (for me personally)the PM seemed more of a personal attack than more public posts.

If people aren't sure how to change settings, this is how....

Go to USER CP (far left option on the black bar)
Under Settings and Options click on EDIT OPTIONS
In the Private Messaging settings options box choose the 'RECEIVE PRIVATE MESSAGES FROM ONLY CONTACTS AND MODERATORS.'

And don't forget to add people as contacts if you wanna recive PMs from them (wisest to leave it til people have been around a little while and you trust them a bit).

Oh, and report this kind of stuff straight away so they can be stopped. It's nothing for any of us to be embarrassed about. THEY are the person with the problem to be sending such poison to people.

I can assure you we are doing everything possible. These members are always banned immediately.

Most of these trolls use multiple IP numbers and proxy's. We have several groups of trolls with numerous member names. They each have their own special group. This helps us keep track and catch them as soon as we can.

There are many times we can't ban IP numbers because they are shared with many other members in good standing.

This member joined right after midnight and was banned by Dee by 04:21 AM Pacific Time. They were only here for about 4 hours and 15 minutes.

They were able to send out 16 PMs in that time. I removed all the sent PMs, but some members saw them before I was able to remove them. I have a setting that allows me to remove all sent PMs by individual members.

You can change your PM settings to add an extra layer of protection.
