Your post is a profound one, that makes me ponder: What's the difference between a person who nurses a glass of wine in an hour and one that wants to drink 9 glasses of wine in an hour? I spend 4 decades being the latter.

In my experience, alcohol always serves an emotional purpose. The first person is in control of how they feel. You could say they understand their personal enterprise and are empowered by being themselves. They are in control of their feelings and don't want to leave how they feel. The second person, wants to escape how they feel, they feel trapped, helpless, powerless and want to regain control of their feelings with a quick fix or mood changer of drugs or alcohol. The antidote, while easier said than done is to regain control of our feelings our emotions with healthy behaviors that we value. When we navigate life with values and purpose, we value ourselves. Our values are the starting place for all our beliefs, actions and behaviors. When our values trump our addictions, there is no addiction. There is only one glass.

Welcome, Beth, good luck with your recovery. We have all been there with the mortification, shame, guilt and depression.
