Just for today:warnings

From "Looking out for overelation:"

"We have learned now not to panic when the
thought of a drink comes into the mind....But
the THOUGHT of a drink is not necessarily the
same thing as the DESIRE for one, and neither
need plunge us into gloom or fear. Both can
be viewed simply as warning bells to remind us
of the perils of alcoholism. The perils are
forever, even when we feel so fine that we
wonder whether it's really all right to feel as
good as we do, now."

c. 1975, Living Sober, pages 43-44

I'm halfway through Living Sober myself. Easy to read, with lots of common sense. Mine's on loan, I'll hate to give it back. Hummm, maybe Santa..........

Red face

I believe that none of us is responsible for our very first thought, whether it be of drinking, drugging, or not. What IS within our contol are the thoughts that follow that first thought. I often have thoughts of drinking. Even with over eight months of sobriety, it is still automatic (although not as much as before). However, any time those thoughts come up, I consciously follow them with the reality of what drinking would do to me. I try to use the same strategy for dealing with negative self-talk. It takes practice, but it DOES work!!!
