It is a great feeling, doing something to help someone else. When I was new, my sponsor got me to pick up someone, take them to a meeting, and drop them home again. I have long forgotten the person, but I never forgot the feeling. I wanted more of that.

be patient with your body and mind too - it may take a little while to start feeling good again

Just to add something that helped my idea of "service" - there are plenty of small ways to do it IRL not just in the rooms. Ex- my first sober job was at Chick-Fil-A, a big fast food chain here with a very positive ethos etc- and I would collect all the change I had in each day and take it with me to work- I used it to "round up" for others so they'd get the whole dollar back instead of like $0.92.

Volunteering is awesome, but I waited til I was a good bit sober - 7 or so mo- and my now-husband and I started delivering meals (once a quarter) for one of my favorite charities in the city.

Honestly? I've never picked up the coffee cups or been a greeter (I am not sure we have a formal position for it, but someone often does). I have led or been the topic leader (usually two different things at the places I go) many times over my 2 yrs sober.

Any contribution to the in the rooms or out of them worlds are service, to me.

That's amazing. I was just sitting here thinking I needed some kind of volunteer work. Thanks for sharing your story.

Yes that is a normal thing for them to ask of you. My sponsor asked me to pick up 3 service commitments when I was relatively new.
