Day 1 being sober

Does anyone have any tips to overcome alcohol addiction? Its 8 pm and normally by this time I would be drunk. I'm suffering some cravings and need some tips to overcome the cravings. I'm very shaky and sweating and feel nauseous. This is a horrible feeling and I hope these symptoms go away soon.

Welcome to SR, so much knowledge and wisdom here. I'm only 27 days in myself, though I run down this road before.

Have you heard of urge surfing? Do a search here, I recently bumped up a post by Dee on it - always found it remarkably helpful.

Thank you! I wouldn't have heard of it until now. Congrats on your 27th day, I'm already struggling and its only my first day. I know the first week will probably be the hardest.

Watch stupid movies or go to Netflix, post here. Read a book. Call somebody. Lots of people here swear by exercise.

Another line too is "playing the movie forward" - have you heard of that?

Can either play out what another drunk night would be for you - seeing that, even though you badly want to drink, what will really happen won't feel good - it will result in the same crap that brought you here.

And you can play out what it will feel like tomorrow morning when you wake up after a sober night of sleep - feeling rested and strong and regaining whatever confidence you may have lost being enslaved to this stupid disease.

Welcome to SR, Natasha.

There is a very good thread on surviving urges and cravings.

I will try to find it and post a link here.
