happy to be me

A kid came into my classroom during her lunch. She said that she was there to catch up on some work, but it became pretty clear she wanted to talk. She talked about her plans when she graduated (11th grader). For whatever reason, she saw me as someone she could confide in and maybe give her some advice. Don't know why since she seems to come from a good family and said she has a mentor. Maybe as a substitute teacher she saw me as having no stake in her future and would give her an honest opinion. I have attempted suicide several times in the past. What a self-centered thing to do. You never know what a difference you can make in a person's life. This is not an ego thing, but just maybe I made a difference in this kid's life. If anything, my conversation with her made me feel humble. Just glad I'm alive and can still do good for other people. John

Kids can be pretty perceptive. Maybe she saw something in you that’s hard for you to see yourself

Thanks for sharing your experience John. Life certainly never turns out the way we might have expected. Those moments of meaning are priceless.
Best wishes to you.

TBH, If it wasn't for my working with kids, I'd pretty much be thinking of only me and my issues so I know what you're talking about. One of the reasons I continue to work with kids. They have a way to both keep me humble and grateful. John

What a wonderful thing to be available to help a student.

Well done, John.

I'm a lucky guy. Those kids have no idea what a difference they make in my life. Wished the kids a happy Easter Vacation. They wished me the same. Doesn't get any better than that. Like I said, I'm a lucky guy. I end my day alone in my apartment but that's ok. Those moments are enough to make me feel good about being me. Pretty cool, eh? John

I was walking to my car at the end of the day, when a car full of students drove buy. A guy in the car yelled out, I love you. Then he saw me and said, not you, and pointed to someone else. Now that's funny. John
