I am an alcoholic

I have decided to admit to my alcoholism after 40 years of recreational drinking. I have had a hard time admitting that after that first swig I am powerless over alcohol. Never been a daily drinker but when I do drink I lose control. Weird thing is my family who have been impacted the most are saying that my drinking isnt that bad. Today is Day One.

Welcome. My husband used to say my drinking wasn't that bad either and actually get mad at me for even talking to him about it. I was miserable though. I had to do it for me and not pay attention to what he thought. Oddly since I stopped he hasn't said one word about it. Maybe he hasn't noticed.

Family sometimes stays in denial long after it is apparent to ourselves. Part of it is that they just don't understand the difference in someone that over-drinks by choice and those otherwise that have no choice.

I also think my family doesn’t necessarily want to see the problem. It makes it very difficult to ask for help from them. I wish they could hear the crazy conversations in my head surrounding drinking. Although then they might actually have me committed!

Still finding it hard to say "I am an alcoholic". I think that's why I titled my post. Trying to get comfortable with it.

Welcome first step is to admit you have a problem. Now you have to have a plan and stick to it. We are all here with the same issues.

Some have a problem with the term because some normies believe the term implies some type of moral failing. But as I've learned in recovery f what other people think.

i think ya have bigger fish to fry here- what you call yourself isnt as important at this time and doesnt help with solutions.
it would be wise to start looking into a program/plan of recovery to start working/living to help you stay sober and improve your life.

now to complicate it:
do you know what it means to be an alcoholic?
its a lot more than just what we drink.

My brother asked why I'd quit drinking. I confessed that I'd been drinking a bottle of wine a day. His response? "So? That's not so bad, you need to do things you enjoy".

He doesn't drink much at all so didn't get it at all. Yes I enjoyed drinking wine, I liked the taste. I didn't set out to get drunk but I couldn't stop drinking. That one bottle was only going to gradually move to two bottles....

I don't call myself an alcoholic, it doesn't matter. I had an alcohol problem, I had to quit.

Welcome to SR. We get it.
