What favorite pieces of wisdom have you learned from SR

I'll start. There are many, but I loved, "Look at the past, but don't stare at it."

“They are just thoughts and have no power over you.” (Reffering to AV and emotions)

TheToddman 02-03-2018 06:21 PM

(Paraphrased) "Hubris may have its place, but humility serves us better in recovery."

Delilah1 02-03-2018 06:22 PM

Take alcohol completely off the table, it is not an option, no matter what.

scottynz 02-03-2018 06:29 PM

Nobody wakes up the next morning glad they were drinking the night before.

Recovering = thinking about not drinking
Recovered = not thinking about drinking

Boleo.

That getting sober is about much much more than just putting down the bottle. It's about building a life around NOT drinking. It takes a big commitment and a lot of changes.

Create a plan for sobriety.

Dee will do a happy dance if he sees this. :-)

Anger leads to the dark side. Oh, wait...

That putting down the bottle is the first part of my journey. The second part is when the real work was able to start. Embracing and working my program.

DangerZone 02-04-2018 04:18 AM

Keep going, it gets better.

Yes, he has said it to me a few times throughout the many years. I finally listened - and wouldn’t you know it’s working. Thanks Dee, if you’re reading!

I have learned that addicts are a bunch of really compassionate, intelligent and sensitive people that truly care about the welfare of their peers.

THIS and being active and accountable in recovery is why I am currently almost 21 months sober. But, about 90% of it is exactly what Delilah said.

"your disease is outside in the carpark doing pushups waiting on you"

No alcohol for 5 years and this is what sticks in my head most from aa, maybe cause it was repeated the most!

Two things:
Let go or be dragged.
Make a recovery plan.

soberandhonest 02-04-2018 07:53 AM

My big three: (1) make a personalized written recovery plan and follow it, (2) after some significant recovery time, become wedded to the idea that nobody (with really strong emphasis on nobody) but me has control over whether I drink, and (3) freedom from addiction is a tremendous accomplishment, but it's even bigger than that because it demonstrates that we can accomplish anything we set our minds and bodies to; so make it bigger!
