I always get beer and drink 2 or 3 the rest of the way home
welcome, pauleyp.
i highlighted the above because you are using the wrong tense.you USED to always get beer and always drink several on the way home.
but now you do something different.
way to go!
and might help to change other parts of your going-home routine, just to get out of the habitual groove.

Made it home with no beer! I'm actually gonna cook up some healthier grub tonight. Tomorrow should be a challenge because it's Friday. I fully intend to have a sober Friday night. Thanks everyone for the encouragement.

Welcome. Similar story, in my fifties, ‘functioning alcoholic’, but one day my body got as mad as hell and wouldn’t take it anymore, aka gout. Six months in now.
Beyond deciding not to drink, what are you doing to make sure you can see this through?

Day 5 is here. I've got to get through my work day and make it home with no beer. I'm going to make it happen.
Good luck to you as well, GirlScreaming!
Mac, so far I've just been trying to remain calm when I get home and say to myself, "It's no big deal" (being sober vs being drunk). I've got all my food to get prepared so that my body can start healing and I can get my diabetes and cholesterol back in control. My Friday evening is going to consist of getting it all prepared for the weekend. Beyond that, I haven't thought about anything else except maybe getting back into the gym. Do you have any suggestions or advice?

We made it to day 5!
Maybe you can start taking a short walk in the evenings and work on increasing the time/distance every couple of days. As your body starts healing you can add in weights and/or a gym membership (you can afford one now that you quit drinking!)
Reward yourself with things you enjoy that you neglected because of alcohol. Have a good and sober night Pauley.
