It's great to have you with us, Scott. I can definitely relate - spent most of my life in a numb & foggy state. It's important to not spend the rest of it filled with regret or remorse - but I had to work on that.

I drank 30 yrs & now have 10 sober ones - thanks mostly to the encouragement I found here at SR. My family & friends were social drinkers - no one drank the way I did - they could have one or two & stop. When I first came here I was drinking all day, every day - even took it to work. I did things I swore I never would - my life was in danger. I'm thankful I have the chance to live the rest of my days with eyes wide open & clear headed.

Suddenly 60 and a drunk

You've been approaching 60 for many years, it didn't get here suddenly.

Probably the same thing with the drunk part.

But if you've been drinking for a long time, you can be suddenly sober.

However, decades long habits, behaviors and feelings aren't going to change over night, and it's hard to make those changes necessary to stay sober. I'm about your age and after many years of trying to do it by myself, I gave up and went to AA. I'm not a huge AA guy today, I don't go to many meetings anymore. But the fellowship of other guys, some with many years of sobriety was very helpful to me.

I'm coming up on 8 years sober, so it is possible to teach an old dog, new tricks.

Suddenly 60 and a drunk... Time flies by.

I know I wasn't suddenly a drunk @ 60. It's taken decades of being a drunk to realize I was a drunk. Yea... that sounds better ! It's just that
time passes so damn quickly. Parent's, friends - many of them long deceased. Just trying to wake up and get a grip.

This disease is stronger than you. If you could have stopped on your own, you would have already.

Realizing that, what are you going to do for help? What's your plan?

Yeah, my dogs don't judge me. But my alcoholic behavior would make them nervous around me sometimes.

That's #1 I'm holding there. #2 was his mama, adopted about 6 months after we got him. They're both gone now, buried in the back yard. #3 my wife took when she left. #4 and #5 are here with me now. Half brother & half sister, from same breeder #2 came from.

Glad you're here, Scott.

I, too, am 60, at least for a few more months.

I certainly plan on finishing out the rest of my years sober on a day by day basis.

I couldn't imagine how bad being hungover at our age must feel.

I'm happy that you have decided to give up that horrible lifestyle and join the folks like us who enjoy life without alcohol.

Please hang around and keep us posted.

I hope that you pursue a program of recovery which has a good track record.

I joined AA many years ago and haven't had a drink since.

I have also had many happy, alcohol-free years of recovery.

Hello and welcome! 60 here. Believe me I know how you feel. I have always checked in the 24 hour recovery connection thread every morning to remind me of who I am and I can't drink. I think it has helped me. Best wishes for you on your journey!

Hi Scott, I got sober at 54, I am 57 now. Just being myself is something I enjoy. This site plays a big part in my not drinking.
