Will I considered rude if I knit at AA meeting?

I have a lot of knitting to finish up for Christmas and I'm wondering if it would be rude of me to knit in AA meetings.

biminiblue 12-17-2017 06:50 AM

Not by me.

I saw people doing all kinds of crafty things. Drawing, knitting, do your thing! Whatever calms your mind is good. :)

Not by me either....but I know for sure that there's people that WOULD consider it rude. But pay them no mind. Who cares what they think...

i think by asking, you already have the answer in your gut. seems ya wouldnt be asking if ya didnt think it would be rude.

would you be ok with people knitting, texting, or playing games on their phone while you shared?
idk about you, but one thing i had to learn is common courtesy

biminiblue 12-17-2017 07:30 AM

 Tom, you ARE a tough old guy, aren't you? :lmao

Knitting isn't at all like phone use. Not even on the same playing field. IMO, of course.

MindfulMan 12-17-2017 07:33 AM

Agreed.

I don't knit, but I know people that do, and it can be more of something to do with your hands while doing something else, like listening or watching TV. People can have a conversation while knitting, not really so much with texting or video games.

I can't speak for everyone, but I would not consider that rude.

PeacefulWater12 12-17-2017 07:40 AM

I haven't seen it myself but I have heard it is not uncommon for people to knit during meetings. It certainly wouldn't bother me.

My mum used to knit all the time. Makes me smile to think of it.

Well, perhaps you should take up knitting.

I agree that sanding in a meeting would be rude...

I agree 100%. I can pay attention, fully, to a conversation, a movie, etc., while knitting.

I don't think it's rude.

I don't think it would be rude at all.

JustTony 12-17-2017 08:10 AM

No it wouldn't be rude.

People in recovery meetings have much better things to be concerned about.

Strugglingtoget 12-17-2017 08:16 AM

Wha???

I have been going to AA meetings for 29+ years. I have been to thousands of them.
I go to meetings where people have been knitting every day for years --men and women both!
They do not disturb the meeting and they are not disruptive.
Anything you need to do to ensure you get to meetings is A OK, other than disrupting the meeting.

In some meetings, people have been drinking and as long as they are not too disruptive, they are welcome!

Strugglingtoget 12-17-2017 08:17 AM

Sanding makes noise and would be disruptive.

Triggered a few images and made me laugh .
T.S sanding his dove tails , Isa right cross purl stitching her Christmas jumper ,
Jimmy adding the final touches to his model boat, Annie darning her husbands socks . All sober and happy what more do they need .

Ok I love this. I'm a knitter. But not a very good one. So unless I was doing something really simple, like garter stitch the whole time, I would make a heck of a lot of mistakes :)

Soooo, the only reason I'm even posting is because I have an experience with a knitter in recovery. We were in treatment together. She um how do I say this? She had trouble 'fitting in'. And I mean, so do I. But she really, really struggled. She had depression too (well, maybe we all did but hers was more severe). She would put on a happy face but I could see she was really out of her element. And she knitted. All. The. Time. And she could peacefully knit (I'm the only loud knitter I know because I have to rip out my work all the time.....I'm constantly yelling some kind of obscenity), sit in group and 'participate'. Well, that knitting was her security blanket. I'm quite sure it kept her from being uncomfortable. And discomfort would have been a good thing for her. It would have forced her to do something different, to find a different way of coping that didn't involve hiding behind knitting.

Ok Frick wtf are you trying to say? If I were pretty new to AA, new to recovery, new to sharing, new to being a part of, I would just try to be aware of anything that might be keeping me from connecting. I have absolutely no idea what your situation is. Does knitting disturb anyone in a meeting (besides Tom...hehe) no, probably not. Does doing busy work that seems sort of superfluous to the meeting kind of 'separate' one out? Maybe. Is the knitting a way of easing discomfort? Only you know. If it is, the knitting can wait for an hour. If you really have that much knitting that you must knit during AA? Go for it. Its your recovery, ya know.

I think I'm gonna go knit!!! No I'm gonna make cookies!

Ha. Frick, you have a point...

but...WNB? Knitted cookies. I had no idea- there are tons of them. You could just eat your mistakes.

I'm in for mistakes.

I would not find it rude at all.

I imagine many people find it very relaxing and maybe ease their nervousness in a meeting.

Soberween 12-17-2017 09:11 AM

I see quite a few women knitting at meetings and it's not rude at all. Woodworking is not a comparable hobby to compare because it is loud and distracting.
