Had a friend lose his battle

Friend of mine has been trying to beat his addiction for a long time, he was the owner of the bar at our lake, everyone told him he needed to give up the bar but it's all he's done since 20 years old and he also lived upstairs there, he passed away in the hospital a few days ago at the age of 48, total liver failure, he was in an induced come for almost a week before he passed , his sister and mom are devastated, so sad.

Since going to AA regularly, it has opened my eyes to just how many people die at such a young age due to alcohol consumption. As I wrote in another thread there is a common theme that old timers who came in with others who didn't stick to quitting, at least 50% are no longer on this Earth. I never really comprehended the magnitude of risk there is with abusing alcohol that doesn't just end with death. So many debilitating diseases and ailments are the direct result of abusing alcohol, but there is good news. Quitting drinking drastically reduces your chances of developing such issues and it really isn't too late to quit but don't wait before it's too late.

Very sorry for the loss of your friend.
This is a stark and cruel reminder that the poison is indeed deadly.
What we are up to here is indeed about life or death.

I am saddened to learn that your friend was not able to find a way free.

Sorry for your loss.

In my local area where I attend AA,we have lost 8 people in the last fortnight. Each one of them had gone back to drinking after a period of sobriety.

We have to stay away from that first drink.

Sorry to hear of this loss. This is also a solid reminder to those that keep drinking. Dying in your 40's, and if you even make it to your 50's is the common range for alcoholics.

Sorry for your loss. So young too. This is a horrible disease.

SoulShine8 12-16-2017 01:23 PM

I'm so sorry to hear this. He wasn't much younger than me. I don't hang out with the people I used to hang with in the bars, but several of them have passed. Some good people who just lived the bar life. I got out of that but not out of drinking until now... glad to be here. Glad you are here too sport. Take care.

That is awful to hear, really sorry for your loss and for everyone it touches.
People use the life or death chat a lot but in so many circumstances it really is.

Delilah1 12-16-2017 04:53 PM

MindfulMan 12-16-2017 06:30 PM

Sorry for your loss Sportdeck.

I've lost two friends, 38 and 49. Another guy I knew in rehab was in his late 20s, got out on a Friday and died on Sunday of a heroin overdose.

I thought they were an anomaly, but when I did my own sobriety I realized this sad story is all too common.

Really drives home that we all need to stay sober and treasure every moment.
