Can't stop thinking about drinking

The more I try to stop/cut down on the drinking, the more I seem to obsess over it.

Hi, welcome!

Are you trying to quit or moderate? My efforts at moderating resulted in total obsession with when I could/couldn't drink, it was exhausting.

If it is any conciliation, the first 3 months were rough, but after that I rarely thought about. I started feeling so good, I wanted to hang onto that instead of a beer

I guess I should edit the post, I am just trying to cut down. I don't drink everyday but when I do, a lot of the time I binge. I am at least trying to keep the days that I drink down to a minimum.

I found that trying to cut down led to such a lot of obsessing like you were describing. It was definitely my aim to cut down, not quit, when I started out in April this year. I tried all summer, with quite a bit of success but my intake kept creeping back up. In September I'd had enough, it was actually easier to quit.

I also found it easier to quit drinking completely than to moderate. And after a few months sober, I thought about drinking a lot less. And now I rarely think about it. In fact, the times I think about it are times when I am grateful that I finally got sober for good.

I too found it easier in the long run to quit, rather than trying to moderate. Alcohol is like potato chips. Who is going to stop at one or two once they start? Not I for sure.

Hi happycamper

Like others have said I couldn't cut down - I wanted to drink to get wasted - and when I wasn't doing that the obsession to do just that was relentless.

It was like torture.

When I quit the obsession didn't give up right away, but with support and a little hard work, it faded in time.

I hope you'll think about going the whole way and quitting
