Thoughts are like parcels.

Thoughts are like parcels on a conveyor belt and we are in the control centre, I have a choice as to wether I pick that parcel up or not. I can choose to let that parcel go on by OR I can pick it up open it and analyse the living day lights outta it!

That's pretty much what my therapist told me!

I found it interesting and thought I'd share, not just a good analogy for my anxiety issues but can also be used for addiction etc

That's a great analogy Chilled. I read a book that was recommended to me by a member on here, it's called The Little Book of Big Change by Amy Johnson. It talks about changing your habits and how it's all about how you relate to those intrusive thoughts. She says that the way out is to stop respecting or obeying those thoughts and to start seeing them as our lower brains habituated processes. You should check it out, if you're interested.

That's true, Chilled. When I learned that, it was an incredible step forward for me.

If I can change my reaction to the weird thoughts in my head then maybe I can actually get my life back!

Glad you all found it useful

Chill- as is your post..waaay cool. I had a counselor- at the crucial early stage (VERY EARLY) of my recovery who used analogies and metaphors so often- they would frustrate the crap out of me. They are very useful. For those who believe- Jesus taught using little narratives- using metaphor and analogy.
Like in meditation- imagine breathing in positive energy and breathing out the negative. Thanks.

I love that Chilledice ,thanks

Another I saw is the two wolf parable:

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life...

"A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy.
"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.

"One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.

"The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

"This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather,
"Which wolf will win?"

The old chief simply replied,
"The one you feed."

What a great parable Thomas59!

Speaks right to my issues, am I feeding the junk in my mind or am I feeding logic and rational thinking?

Chillendice I am in a CBT therapy course week 3 through our NHS . It was recommended to me by my GP to help with anxiety / moods etc . I have withdrawn from health sites , anxiety symptom sites , symptom checking google checking . these all feed into the fear cycle and keep me anxious so no more of this behaviour .

That is SPOT ON! I've been constantly looking up ocd and ptsd and going on anxiety forums, but those places are just breeding grounds of fear!

But no more!

With the Autumn within touching distance I am going to check the local colleges and see if I can find an evening course . I have thought about Yoga for beginers , mediatation, or something along those lines .

That is a great analogy for certain. I learned a similar one from an anxiety podcast that described our thoughts as the water in a river flowing past us. We have the ability to simply watch them go by vs immersing ourselves in them and eventually drowning if we don't watch out.

Exactly Scott!

I've been drowning and it's been like a silent scream inside of me, but I CAN actually choose wether to react to thoughts or not!
