Inspiration Hi everyone, I am really struggling with staying sober as the AA meetings are miles away from where I live. (I don't drive) So. ..I was wondering if anyone could recommend any books or movies that have inspired them ? I work during the week so it's really for a distraction in the evenings and weekends. I recently read 'Drinking-A Love Story' and really enjoyed this. It deterred me for a while at least. Many thanks in advance. |
There's a look of books in one of our sticky posts at the top of the forum :) http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...ependence.html |
Glad you posted! I am a big reader too and, especially in early sobriety (well, earlier- I still consider it early at 18 mo), found books on recovery really helpful and also time-consuming which was a good thing. Caroline Knapp's book is excellent and my copy is well worn with many reads. I'd also suggest either of Patrick Kennedy's books, Blackout by Sarah Hepola (this was very much like my drinking experience and we are close in age so it resonated greatly), Out of the Wreck I Rise (a more literary book but simply excellent), and AA-approved books like Living Sober, and Your First Year of Sobriety. I also started reading devotionals by Richard Rohr of the CAC (a Friar who often has very 12-step connected messages)- you can get daily, weekly or monthly emails. Reading the daily one is part of my morning recovery program. Do you have a copy of the Big Book? That's some of the best material we can use ;) Hope to see you around here. |
miscostalot Following recommendations I saw on this site I bought Annie Grace: This Naked Mind - Control Alcohol. It's on the book list that Dee linked. This book changed my whole thinking about alcohol in the 28 hours over which I read it. I can't say more than that. |
