Self Talk

I was wondering does anyone use a quick one liner in their head when they find themselves heading to the adult beverage store that keeps them strong and sober?

Yes I used to have conversations with myself, and talk myself out of it, anything that stops me drinking I will do it, good luck

If I had a short phrase that worked, I'd be a millionaire.

I can give it a go tho

remember it's the first drink that gets you not the last...

if you're an alcoholic like me, things go awry from the moment you take that first drink...everything that happens after radiates out from that one stupid decision..

there's a technique called playing the tape through - its about forcing yourself to remember where a drink will take you.

It worked for me - it was a lot harder to drink when I knew it might be weeks or months before I was sober again.

Noone ever woke up regretting not drinking SWB

I didn't often have conversations with myself. I was pretty afraid of relapsing and whenever a cravings hit I showed my mind back the fear and desperation. I'm trying to get off sugar and what seems to work now is rubbing my arm and saying "you don't hAve to live that that anymore." I say it as soon as I become aware my mind is trying to go there. It's working .

"Play the tape forward"

Simple and effective.... I play the scenario out in my head. I think of how I crappy I will feel the next day, week, month as I relapse.....

Then I realize "It just ain't worth it".

I most definitely talk to myself when it comes to my sobriety...If the ugly voice creeps in...I remind my self that yes....I am an alcoholic...the first sip would lead to months of my life lost...feeling like I am dying constantly is not worth 5 minutes of self indulgence. As Rider and Dee stated...basically I play it forward...what would happen if I stopped at the store?...I have years and years of historical data that prove that no...I can not drink alcohol. it is a slippery slope.
As for a single phrase...I love being alive and drinking is not living...
Seems to work for me

I have a catchphrase I have adopted in sobriety - "I refuse to sink." I have a bracelet, mug, and soon to be tattoo with that phrase, and a picture of an anchor. The anchor signifies that I will stay firm and strong, and not go drifting off into the storm, where my little sobriety boat would surely get swamped and sink. So if I ever feel like I'm about to get into trouble (not just with drinking), I look at my bracelet and repeat "I refuse to sink" in my head.

Someone once posted this on here and it stuck with me, so whenever I feel an urge I always remind myself "I've NEVER regretted NOT drinking"

how does one FIND themselves headed to the adult bev store?
there are steps and decisions made well before. so any affirmations should be confirmed early on and daily.

My problem is they are confirmed early on, but as the day goes on I find my strength disappears.

Please excuse my wisenheimer reply but sometimes I just can't help myself, also I find laughter to be excellent medicine as long as I am laughing with and not at.

I never found that the adult beverage store ever kept me strong or sober!!! :~)
