Afternoon foolishness

Hello All,

I've been sober off and on for a LOOONG time. Recently I've fallen back into the afternoon drinking habit - and hate it. I've been in AA and it just wasn't for me. Too many reasons to discuss. I was in Rational Recovery and did quite well for years. Not sure why I let it slide.

I was in a local recovery program for a while but it was really just supporting the court system and I wasn't there due to court action. That's where I learned about Rational Recovery.

Anyway I made a decision to quit this nonsense and get my life back. Seems this is a good place to start.

This afternoon beer drinking is a nasty habit. I don't even enjoy it. It does nothing but waste time and money. Really goofy behavior and I know better. But comes noon and it's like a magnet pulling me and all my good sense becomes nonsense.

Maybe someone here has some insight.

Thanks!

Welcome, Ice!

I'm glad you joined us.

It might be helpful to make specific plans for the afternoons, so you are doing something other than drinking. Getting out of the house and walking works for me. Hopefully you can find something that works for you.

Hi and Welcome!

SR is the place that got me together.
It literally has saved my life.
This is the only thing I have done.. no AA or any help.

Reading and participating has allowed me to learn. Now I have more understanding to my addiction.

Change of pace was necessary too. I started to walk and exercise and eat proper.

You can do this and be happier and healthier too!

Stay close !

Hi Ice...Welcome to SR 💜

I agree with others...making plans or commitments for the afternoons sounds like a way forward. What are you current daily commitments...work, children, education, exercise, hobbies, volunteering?

Glad you found us. I am quitting wine but, I was a heavy beer drinker and really hated the taste. I drank it for food. So I changed to wine in flavored water. Dumb! Do you know what H.A.L.T. is? It is the triggers that cause you to pick up a drink. Get to know your triggers and break some old habits.
I hope you find information here to help you! Keep posting, too.

Ice,

It is not a habit, it is addiction.

It is physical and mental.

The physical takes about a week to go away, the mental then ramps up and slowly goes away. The mental addiction weakens but lives in our emotions.

Folks relapse and immediately regret it after years of sobriety.

Some are so ashamed that they have ruined their life, they commit suicide during a drunken black out.

This booze thing is serious. I am still learning to deal w life normal since I was a drunk for 40 years.

Booze is a highly addictive neuro toxin that slowly destroys our body and mind. One of the first places folks w too many drinking problems end up is under psychological evaluation. Brain damage is real here.

Thanks.

Thanks all for the encouragement.

I just finished up some positive thoughts as a daily reminder of why I need to quit being stupid. I'd like to share:

1. I will feel much better, less pain.

2. I will sleep much better.

3. I will have far more energy.

4 I will have free time from drinking to do things I
enjoy.

5. I will have more money to buy things I really want
and to go places I would like.

6. I will not worry about or need to hide my drinking.

7. I can become stronger.

8. I will lose weight and be healthier.

9. I won’t make as many mistakes in everyday things.

10. I will think clearer and have a better memory.

11. My balance and flexibility will be better.

I have decided to start a walk/exercise program for the afternoons. It is about a mile and a half down to a very beautiful park. I have done martial arts for years and will spend about a half hour doing Tia Chi and then walk home. Should take about 1 1/2 hours.

The emotional part will take some hard work. I lost two sons, a daughter, a brother, his wife and my best friend in a three year span. Yet: the truth is drinking only makes it worse.

My understanding is it takes about six weeks for brain neurons to adjust to the absence of alcohol. I don't really care if it's a physical addiction, a psychological dependence. It does become a habit and I know I have to change that and attitudes that help promote the habit.

Drinking SUCKS !!!

Thanks again for your concerns and support and I will keep coming here very regularly for your support and advice. Ice.
