Welcome butterfly. I know its hard especially the first day. I had to get to a place where I couldn't drink or I would have caved. Maybe you can do that to.

Hi Butterfly,

Welcome!

You could get rid of any alcohol in your house and then sit down and make a plan for how to get through the early days. It's good to keep busy and to distance yourself from friends/places where alcohol is being served. You can always come here and post to get support.

Hi Butterfly,

After you've thrown out all of the liquor in your home and you made a plan on how you will remain abstinent, tell yourself that you will not drink for today. Then, come here whenever you feel that you need to drink. Post questions, learn about your addiction and how others have found recovery.

If I can do it, anyone can! You got this!

Yep make the house "dry". Expect that nasty voice, we call our alcoholic voice or AV, to start talking inside your head. She only wants to get you to drink. Expecting that voice, recognizing it and having a plan to tell it to buzz off is what the early days of recovery are all about.

I needed to get out of my house, where I did all my drinking, for a few days in order to get sober; a medically supervised detox center saved my life. A state grant covered the cost. I would guess that Massachusetts might have similar funds available. Make some calls -- you can stop!

Do not have alcohol anywhere near you and do not seek out alcohol. If it's not available, you can't drink it.
You do what it takes to stay sober.
You CAN do this.

I stopped by stopping STOPPING and starting STARTING.

STARTING with a full and honest CHOICE to embrace sobriety.

STARTING to go to meetings every day.

STARTING to read the Big Book.

STARTING to go to therapy.

STARTING to embrace new sober activities and connections.

STARTING to keep my head in sobriety every. single. day.

STARTING to support my every single day with ACTIONS that supported sobriety.

STARTING to choose again every day.

STARTING to START and end each day with gratitude.

STARTING to remember spirituality in my life daily.

STARTING to watch sunrises and sunsets.

STARTING to be thankful, forgiving, open to possibility.

STARTING to respond to life with deep breaths and appropriate actions - instead of drinking.

STARTING to let go - of things, places, people and thoughts that were not supportive of sobriety.

I stopped by STARTING.....

And I've been starting again, every day, since then..... nearly four years ago.

You can do it.

start with your doctor and a medical detox, maybe rehab. Then learn not to drink one day....then the next....and the next.....

Find a program of recovery that works for you and work it like it's life or death (which it is).

Move forward from there!!!! You can do this!!!!

Stopping is easy. I must have done it a thousand times. Staying stopped was a different story. Something seemed to go wrong with my thinking. I had the best reasons to stop, really powerful stuff. Anyone sane person who had my reaction to alcohol, would never touch another drop. But the memories seemed to fade, and very quickly too. Soon I was chasing the old delusion that this time will be ok, and it never was.

I'd get rid of all the booze, mostly by drinking it. There was never much left when I finished a bender. I would stay away from temptation. I even tried moving to another town. I would try distraction, a new hobby, or try to get interested in something else. But I was never able to beat that strange trick the mind performs, convincing me it was ok to drink just this once.

Then I did pretty much what Freeowl was talking about. I realized I couldn't beat it on my own, I joined up with some people who had actually beaten it, and I did what they did. The obsession was lifted quite quickly and has never returned.
