Careful What You Wish For

Last drink July 4th!
Independence Day re-defined!

I drank 5-7 beers / glasses of wine a night, pretty steady. No driving accidents or arrests, no fights, no getting fired or dumped. I would drink 2-3 quick and get to a nice buzzed place, then have a beer an hour after that and just be right there. Rarely got truly drunk.

It was more drinking than I was comfortable with, especially in my fifth decade. It was a steady downward pull on all aspects of my life. I wanted to drink less.

Careful what you wish for. What I thought was heartburn got me admitted to the hospital with a very angry liver. An MRI and some tests later found me clear of Hepatitis A, B, and C, but found that I had developed the same kind of condition through my drinking. They call it Alcoholic Hepatitis. No virus; it's caused by alcohol.

So no more drinking for me. Bummer. I was having fun with craft beer and trying more Spanish red wines.

Day 11. Librium keeping me good, if sleepy. Craving sugar. Think about beer a little but mostly feeling bored. It's going to take me a while to get into a sober groove.

It's nice to meet you all. I like the community you are building here.

Welcome aboard Cyrano

Sorry about your liver but I agree as wake up calls go, it's a doozy.

You'll find sober life can be every bit as fun and rewarding - more so even I think

Welcome!

I'm glad that you found out about your liver health and hopefully you can follow the doctors advice and begin to heal.

Welcome, I am sure I would eventually had a similar wake-up call if I hadn't found these forums five months ago!

Hey Cyrano - Welcome to SR

When I was getting sober.. I watched a ton of old movies to fight the boredom. Netflix really helped me !

Welcome Cyrano! I was diagnosed with fatty liver last year. I still drank for a few months after that, beware of how easy it is to ignore the need to abstain. Complete insanity! I'm 9 months sober now and my liver enzymes are all back to normal. Stick with us! Things can get better even if some degree of liver damage remains

Dr made me quit also. It certainly is a change. I'm on month 5 and things are starting to even out a bit for me finally.

congrats and hang in there!

Thanks, all for the nice welcome messages!

I'm sticking with it, sure would like a beer right now after working with a difficult client, but that's on the list of triggers!

The main ones:
Hungry
Tired
Angry
Sad

Sort of all four right now. I had a Gelato with a shot of Espresso and that SEEMS TO BE HELPING!!!

I need some water though. I've been chugging down LaCroix Water cause it's cold and fizzy like beer, and kinda looks like a beer too. One after another. I wonder how much I was drinking beer just cause I was thirsty.

Cheers!

Cyrano- I think some of my alcohol cravings were from being thirsty or even hungry. Welcome to SR! It will get easier! Exercise was a big help for me. Just simply walking.
