how can I deal with stress without alcohol?

After a great strong period of sobriety I started drinking again. I realized quickly what I was doing to myself and need to get back on track with support.
Could anyone offer suggestions of books, meditations, or music for coping with stress without alcohol?

Hi Need2better, welcome to SR and good on you for not wasting time in trying to get back on track. I personally found that drinking made dealing with stress much worse, and being sober helps me to keep thinking straight and not become overwhelmed. Drinking only offers a short escape and things will be worse once your feet are back on the ground.

There is lots of support to be found here and I am sure that you will find lots of helpful replies. Keep reading and posting.

I say the serenity prayer five times to myself and then hand it all over to God. Physically, l exercise and try to break a sweat at some point each and every day and eat clean.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with exercise and throw in a good diet. What I found though was that my stressors did not cause near as much stress after I quit drinking than when drinking. Seemed the world was caving in on me all the time during my drinking career.

Perhaps the question you should be asking yourself is "how can I deal with stress WITH alcohol". Alcohol doesn't help you deal with stress, it adds to it by letting you bury your head in the sand.

I found that my stress level went way down after I'd been sober for a few months. And more importantly, how I dealt with stress was a lot better sober. I don't flip out over things the way I did when I was drinking.

Now, if I'm stressed, I walk my dogs if possible. That always helps me.
