Angry AV... Seriously???

My AV seriously just said, "You're young enough to have a couple relapses..." Seriously? This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard... and it makes me feel so betrayed by my own mind. I read through the forums daily (I'm on day 13) and when I come across someone who is older than me, who has been drinking for longer.. I get this stupid idea that at 30, I'm "young enough" to have a couple relapses, have a "good" time, and then stop later. Madness.

Madness is right!!!!

My relapse, in my mid 30's, lasted for about 22 years.

I am now in my late 50's, sober for 2 years and 4 months.

I couldn't just dip my toe in the waters, it became a full on drowning.

To sobriety and onward!

2ndhandrose: I know for a fact I can't just dip my toe in the waters. Every time I have "just a couple", fast forward a couple weeks- and I'm getting blacked out drunk by myself every night, lost in a depression. Things aren't great right now, but it's better than being drunk and ashamed all the time.

Clever like foxes our AVs. They always seem to know what we want to hear.

Great job recognizing.

Yeah, just for the opportunity to experience some more of those "good times". I don't have to remind myself any longer of the reality of those "good times".
Seriously.

Yes, it is madness.

There is the kindling effect, and each relapse will be harder to come back from.

It was in my 30's that I did the most damage by thinking the same way. Don't make the same mistake a lot of us made by waiting a few decades before finally doing something about it.

I read this on SR but I am not sure who to attribute it to:

"My worst day sober is better than my best day drunk."

My favorite! You're an alcoholic, you're going to relapse, it's what an alcoholic does!

I doubt you'll find anyone here who says gee I'm glad I put 20 years into crazy alcoholic drinking....

and we're the ones who survive. I'm thinking of two people here who died in their 30's early 40s from this stuff.
